How to Cancel an Order on eBay
Two Methods:Canceling an Order as a BuyerCanceling an Order as a Seller
Buyers and sellers can cancel orders on eBay as long as both parties mutually agree to do so. Orders can be canceled successfully on eBay after a seller opens a case in the Resolution Center, but only if agreed upon by both the buyer and the seller.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Canceling an Order as a Buyer
-
1Go to eBay at http://www.ebay.com/.Ad
-
2Click on “My eBay” and log in with your username and password. Your “My eBay Summary” page will appear onscreen.
-
3Point to “My eBay” in the upper right corner and click on “Purchase History.”
-
4Click on the user ID of the seller from whom you ordered the item you want canceled. The seller’s profile page will appear onscreen.
-
5Click on “Contact.”
-
6Enter the item number for the item you purchased and want canceled into the field provided.
-
7Click on “Continue.”
-
8Explain to the seller why you want to cancel your order and ask if they are willing to cancel the transaction in the Resolution Center. In most cases, eBay sellers are willing to work with you as long as you can provide a legitimate reason for not being able to follow through with the transaction.
-
9Click on “Send.” Your message will be sent to the seller from whom you purchased the item. The seller will either reply to your message to negotiate or open a case in the Resolution Center to cancel the order.
-
10Wait for an email from eBay regarding the canceled transaction. After the seller opens a case in the Resolution Center to cancel the order, you will receive an email asking if you agree that the order be canceled.
-
11Click on the link provided to you in the email to accept the seller’s request to cancel the order. After accepting the request, the order you placed for that particular item will be officially canceled.[1]
Method 2 of 2: Canceling an Order as a Seller
-
1Go to https://signin.ebay.com/ and sign in to your eBay account.
-
2Click on the “Sold” link in the left column of your My eBay page.
-
3Click on the user ID of the member who purchased the item you want to cancel. This action will redirect you to the member’s profile page.
- If you have already contacted the buyer regarding canceling the transaction, click on the “More” drop-down menu next to the listing, select “Resolve a problem,” and skip to Step 7 in this article.
-
4Click on “Contact.” A dialog box will open that allows you to contact the buyer who purchased your item.[2]
-
5Compose and send a message to the buyer about canceling the order. You will want to provide an explanation as to why you want to cancel the order, and ask them to accept your request to cancel the order after you open a case in the Resolution Center.
-
6Go to the eBay Resolution Center page at http://resolutioncenter.ebay.com/.
-
7Select “The buyer and I agree to cancel a transaction.”
-
8Click on “Continue.”
-
9Enter the item number of the item you want to cancel into the field provided.
-
10Click on “Continue.”
-
11Follow the remaining onscreen instructions as provided by eBay to cancel the order. eBay will contact the buyer who purchased your item and ask whether they agree to cancel the order.
-
12Wait for the buyer to agree or decline to cancel the order. The buyer will have up to 7 days to respond to the email from eBay.
-
13Return to the eBay Resolution Center at http://resolutioncenter.ebay.com/.
-
14Select the case for the transaction you want canceled.
-
15Select the correct reason for closing the case, such as “The buyer and I have completed this transaction successfully.”
-
16Click on “Close case.” The order will then be officially canceled, and you will receive a final value fee credit from eBay within 7 to 10 days.[3]Ad

Tips
- If you are a seller and haven’t heard back from the buyer after 7 days have passed since opening a case in the Resolution Center, you may return to the Resolution Center and close the case successfully while still receiving a final value fee credit.
- If you are a seller who wants to cancel an eBay order, make sure you open a case in the Resolution Center within 45 days after the sale has been finalized. You will not have the ability to cancel the order after 45 days have passed since the transaction occurred.
Warnings
- If you are a seller, be sure to officially close the case in the Resolution Center within 60 days of the transaction. If you fail to close the case within 60 days, you will not be eligible to receive a final value fee credit for the item that was cancelled.
- After you have purchased or won the bid for an item on eBay, eBay considers the transaction a legally-binding agreement, and you are obligated to pay for the item. If for some reason the seller does not agree to cancel the transaction, the incident will be recorded on your account as an unpaid item, which could result in future account limitations or suspensions.
