How to Defriend

Eight Methods:FacebookTwitterGoogle+PinterestInstagramLinkedInTumblrFlickr
“Defriending” someone on a social media account removes that person from your contact list. The process goes by several names—unfriending, unfollowing, disconnecting, ignoring—but the effect is essentially the same for each social media site.
Steps
Method 1 of 8: Facebook[1]
-
1Navigate to the right profile page. Type your soon-to-be ex-friend's name in the search box at the top of your open Facebook page. Click on the correct result to go to that individual's timeline.
- You could also navigate to the individual's page by clicking his or her name anywhere it appears on your home page or timeline.

2Hover over the "Friends" box. Somewhere below the cover photo, you should see a blue box labeled "Friends" with a checkmark on it. Hover over this box until you see a drop-down menu pop out beneath it.
- This drop-down menu has several options on it, each of which will allow you to view or edit some aspect of your Facebook relationship with the user you are viewing.
-
3Click on the "Unfriend" option. This option should be located at the bottom of the list. Clicking on it will remove this individual from your Friends list.
- Be prepared. Facebook does not notify people who are unfriended, but if that person notices that his or her friends list has decreased by one, you may still be discovered. A visit to your page could also reveal your actions since the "Friends" box will be grayed out.
Method 2 of 8: Twitter[2]
-
1Navigate to the person's page. Click on the "Following" link on the side of your Twitter page. Doing this will produce a list of your current followers. From that list, find the person you want to unfollow and click on his or her name.
-
2Click on the "Unfollow" button. This button should be located beneath the individual's profile picture. Upon clicking it, the person in question will be removed from your "Following" list.
- Be prepared. Twitter does not notify people when they lose a follower, but if someone notices that his or her number of followers has decreased, that person might be able to scroll through his or her list of followers and figure out that you are no longer on it.
Method 3 of 8: Google+[3]
-
1Go to your circles. Hover over the down arrow on your navigation menu in the top left corner of the page. Click on "People" from this menu, then click on "Your circles" from the "People" page.
-
2Locate the individual. You should notice a "Type a name" field on your circles page. Quickly find the individual by typing in his or her name.
- You should also be able to scroll through the people listed there to find the person you want to remove.
- Alternatively, locate the individual by clicking on the circle he or she is a part of. This action lists everyone within that circle, and the shorter list may make it easier for you to find the person in question.
-
3Hover over the person's name. Place your cursor over the tile of the person you wish to remove. You should see a small "X" appear.
-
4Click on the X. Doing so will remove that person from your circles, and as a result, he or she will no longer be able to view your content.
- Be prepared. The person you remove will not be notified of your action, but if he or she attempts to view your Google+ page, that person may realize that you removed him or her.
Method 4 of 8: Pinterest[4]
-
1Navigate to the person's page. From Pinterest's main page, click in the "Search" box located in the upper left corner. Type in the name of the person you want to unfollow and click on the profile when it appears among your search results.
- You can also access a user's page by clicking on his or her name anywhere it appears on your homepage.
-
2Click on the "Unfollow All" button. This button is located just below the user's profile box. It looks grayed out, but the button is actually active, and clicking on it will automatically remove the individual from your list of friends.
- Be prepared. The person you unfollow will not receive a notification, but he or she may realize what you did if that person decides to look through his or her list of followers.
Method 5 of 8: Instagram[5]
-
1Get to the person's profile. Tap or click on the Explore icon on your home screen. Type the individual's username inside the search bar at the top of the page and click on the profile link within the results.
- Alternatively, access the user's profile page by clicking on his or her name when you see it appear on your homepage.
-
2Tap on the "Following" button. Near the top of the individual's page, you should see a green button labeled "Following." Click or tap on this button to unfollow the person in question.
- Note that the label on the button should change from "Following" to "Follow."
- Prepare yourself. The individual you unfollow will not receive any notification, but he or she might find out that you stopped following if that person checks his or her list of followers.
Method 6 of 8: LinkedIn[6]
-
1Go to your "Contacts" page. From any LinkedIn page, click on the "Network" or "Contacts" tab at the top of the screen. Select "Connections" or "Contacts" from the drop-down menu that appears.
- The exact label may vary depending on the version of LinkedIn you are currently using.
-
2Search for the contact you want to remove. Click on the "Search" button in the top right corner of your list and type the individual's name in the box that appears. Hit your "Enter" key to complete the search.
-
3Hover over the person's name. Find the individual's name on your results page. Hover over it with you cursor until a few options appear at the bottom of the results.
- The options that appear will usually be "Tag," "Message," and "More."
-
4Choose the "Remove Connection" option. Click on the "More" option from the initial set that pops up, and select "Remove Connection" from the resulting drop-down menu. Clicking on this option will remove the individual from your list of contacts.
- When you attempt to remove someone, you will be greeted with a pop-up box asking you to confirm the request. The box will ask you if you are certain that you want to remove the connection. Respond by clicking the "Remove" button.
- Note the potential risk. Even though the user you disconnect from will not receive any notification, that individual may still notice that you are missing from his or her list of contacts.
- If you viewed the profile just before you removed the connection, there is also a risk that the individual may have been notified of your view. That notification will draw attention to you, and if he or she tries to check your page in return, your removed connection will likely be apparent.
Method 7 of 8: Tumblr[7]
-
1Go to your "Settings" page. You can access this page by clicking on the gear icon at the top of your Tumblr dashboard.
-
2Click on the "Ignored Users" button. This button should be located at the bottom left corner of your Account Settings page.
- You could also access this page directly by typing the following into your URL bar: tumblr.com/ignore
-
3Type in the correct username. On the Ignored Users screen, you should see a search box. Type the person's username in this box and click on the correct result from the list that populates.
- Note that you could also type in the URL of the individual's Tumblr account instead of the username.
-
4Click on the "Ignore" button. Once the right account has been selected, click on the "Ignore" button next to the search box. Doing so will prevent the user from accessing your Tumblr content.
- Use this option with caution. The user you ignore will not be notified, but if that person attempts to view your Tumblr while logged in, he or she will not be able to do so. Your posts will no longer appear on that person's homepage, either, nor will that person be able to see any messages exchanged between the two of you in the past.
Method 8 of 8: Flickr[8]
-
1Go to your "Contacts" list. Click on the word "Contact" from your Flickr homepage. From there, click on "Contact List."
-
2Navigate to the the correct contact. Opening your contacts list should bring up a drop down menu called "Show." Choose the group that the contact is presently in to navigate to that list, and scroll through until you find the individual's username.
- If you do not know which group the individual is in, you can click on the default "Everyone" setting to see a list of all your contacts.
-
3Click on the "Edit" button. Next to the user's listing, you should see a column labeled, "You list them as..." Beneath this column, click on the "Edit" option.
-
4Uncheck the "Keep as Contact" box. A new edit window will open. Locate the words "Keep as Contact," then click on the check in the box beside that label to remove the checkmark.
-
5Click on the "Remove as a Contact" button. The previous step removes the individual from all of your present contact groups. To fully remove the person from your contacts overall, you will need to click on the red "Remove as a Contact" button that should now appear on the screen.
- Brace yourself for any backlash. The user you remove will not be notified, but it is possible for that user to notice you missing from his or her contact list later on.
