Five Methods:Using Autocorrect for Common SymbolsUsing the Symbol MenuUsing the Symbol WindowUsing Built-in CodesUsing Shortcut Keys
Sometimes the standard characters, numbers, and punctuation marks are just not enough. If you are preparing an MS Word document and need to insert a special symbol such as a copyright symbol, trademark, the ever-popular Euro symbol, and much more, here are a few ways to do this.
Steps
Method 1 of 5: Using Autocorrect for Common Symbols
-
1Open a MS Word document.Ad
-
2Make sure autocorrect is turned on.
- Click on File → Options → Proofing → AutoCorrect Options, then under the AutoCorrect tab, check the Replace text as you type box.
- Note that you can set additional AutoCorrections for symbols you often use, perhaps df for °F.
-
3Type (r) or (R) to create the registered symbol, ®.
-
4Type (c)or (C) to create the copyright symbol, ©.
-
5Type (tm) or (TM) to create the trademark symbol, ™.
-
6Type (e) or (E) to create the euro symbol, €.
Method 2 of 5: Using the Symbol Menu
-
1Place your cursor. Make sure the insert cursor is blinking in the location you're about to place your symbol. Click on the Insert tab on the taskbar.
-
2Locate the Symbol group. Click on the Symbol button, and a list of recently used symbols will appear. Selecting a symbol from that menu will place that symbol where your insertion cursor is located.
Method 3 of 5: Using the Symbol Window
-
1If you’re using an older version of Word, or you do not see the symbol you are looking for, click on More Symbols to open the Symbol window.
-
2The Symbol window will open in the first of two menu tabs. The second tab is the Special Characters tab.
-
3Choose the desired symbol from the Special Characters chart.
-
4Click the Insert button. It’s located on the lower portion of the Symbol window, and the copyright symbol will be inserted in your document at the insertion cursor location.
Method 4 of 5: Using Built-in Codes

Tips
- After you insert a symbol like copyright or trademark, highlight it and then click on Format on the taskbar, select Font, then go to the Font tab and place a check mark in the box next to Superscript. By selecting Superscript, your copyright symbol will be raised slightly above the line of text. Without Superscript, your trademark will appear directly in line with the text exactly like any other letter.
- If you are using the registered symbol and you want it to appear slightly below the line of text, highlight the symbol, go to Format on the taskbar, click on Font, go to the Font tab and put a check mark in the box to the left of Subscript. The registered symbol will drop slightly below your line of text.
- If you don't see the symbol you are looking for in the list, in Windows, try selecting the WingDings font. You will see a different selection of characters to choose from.
