- Virtually all of the great works in the history of medicine can be found
in the Countway’s Center for the History of
Medicine.
- The Countway also collects manuscripts and personal papers of physicians
from the medieval and Renaissance periods through the twentieth century,
including the professional papers of many renowned Harvard faculty
members as well as physicians and scientists from New England and around
the country.
- The Center for the History of
Medicine has curatorial responsibility for a print and
photographic collection of some 100,000 items

Harvard Depository
A number of older, seldom used books and journals have been sent to
off-site storage at the Harvard Depository. These materials may be requested by
patrons through HOLLIS or with staff assistance. Materials at the Harvard
Depository are identified in HOLLIS in the "Location" section of the full record
display of a single item. The name of the owning library will appear followed by
the depository name, for example, "Countway Medicine ... Harvard Depository." To
request that an item whose location is indicated to be the Harvard Depository,
Harvard ID card holders should follow these steps:
- In the "Location" section of the full record, click on "Availability"
- On the next screen. under the heading "Item status," click on "request"
- If you have not yet logged in to your HOLLIS account, you will be
prompted for your Harvard ID and University PIN to login (if you do not
yet have a PIN read further below)
- The next screen will display restrictions on use and provide a list of
locations where an item may be used. Confirm these selection.
- To initiate the recall of an item from the Depository, click on the
"Send Request" button.
Users who do not have a Harvard ID may request items for use in the
library by contacting the Circulation Desk. Center for the History of Medicine
(Rare Books) materials that are stored at the Harvard Depository must be
requested from Rare Books staff and may be used in the Rare Books reading room
only. Depository materials are delivered to the Circulation Desk of the owning
library in 24-48 hours as noted in the confirmation of your request. Items from
the general collection may circulate, while journals must be used in the
library. |
