How to Send an iOS App Developer a Crash Report
Two Methods:Send a report directly from your deviceSend the report via iTunes
The iPhone and iPad app universe is vastly dominated by small development firms and indie developers. If your favorite app crashes, chances are that its developer would benefit from getting a crash report, and will appreciate your gesture to help, sometimes rewarding it with free upgrades to premium features of the app.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Send a report directly from your device
-
1Open your device's Settings. Go to the "General" section. Then open "About" and scroll down to "Diagnostics & Usage." Tap "Diagnostic & Usage Data" to see your crash reports and other data.Ad
-
2Find the crash report you wish to send to the developer. This will likely be the most recent report by date.
-
3Copy the text in the report. To do this, press and hold the text in the report. The Copy & Paste menu should pop up. Pick "Select All." Then tap "Copy".
-
4Paste the report into an email. Compose a new email in the Mail app. In the body of the email, press and hold to bring up the Copy & Paste menu. Tap "Paste" to paste the crash report into the email.
-
5Find the developer's email address. If you don't already have the developer's email address, you can find it on the App Store page of the app under "Support Email Address." Enter the email address in the "To:" field of your email.
-
6Provide context. In the email, describe what you were doing when you encountered the crash, and describe the symptoms and results of the crash. Use as much detail as possible, including the date and time of the crash, what you were doing in the app when the crash occurred, and any other processes that were running on your device at the time. Include this ahead of the actual report.
-
7Ask for a reward (optional). If there are features in the app that you would like to have, but cost money, you may want to add a note indicating this. For example, "I hope you find this report useful. If you feel like rewarding me, I would love an upgrade to the ad-free version of the app."
Method 2 of 2: Send the report via iTunes
-
1Sync with iTunes. Connecting your device to your computer with the USB cable, or over WiFi.
-
2Find the crash report. The exact location of crash reports depends on the Operating System you use. Use Finder on Mac or Explorer on Windows to find the location among the following:
- Mac OS': ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/[name of your device]
- Windows': C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Apple Computer\Logs\CrashReporter\MobileDevice\[name of your device] or C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Logs\CrashReporter\MobileDevice\[name of your device]
-
3Put the report into an email. Pick the most recent crash report for the app in question, or the report that you plan to send. Compose an email and attach the report, as an attachment or, if you prefer, in the body of the email.
-
4Find the developer's email address. If you don't already have the developer's email address, you can find it on the App Store page of the app under "Support Email Address." Enter the email address in the "To" field of your email.
-
5Provide context. Describe what you were doing when you encountered the crash, including as many specific details as possible. Include this description in the body of the email, ahead of the actual report.Ad
