Three Methods:Hyperlinks in Emails/BlogsHyperlinks in DocumentsHyperlinks in HTML

Web pages are interconnected with a network of links. Links are used in social media posts, web pages, emails and documents. You can insert hyperlinks into your text. Once clicked, the links will redirect the reader to a web page or web-hosted document. It is recommended you do not click links from non-trusted sources as you could get malware or a virus on your computer.

  2. Insert a Hyperlink Step 2.jpg
    2
Highlight the address bar with your mouse. Click the right mouse button and choose “Copy” from the drop down list.
  3. Insert a Hyperlink Step 3.jpg
    3
Open another browser tab. Go to your email program, such as Gmail, Outlook or Yahoo. You can also use the same method in WordPress or other programs that use a formatting toolbar to format text.
  4. Insert a Hyperlink Step 4.jpg
    4
Start your email or blog post. When you get to the point that you want to insert a link, click the small chain icon in the formatting toolbar. It looks like two connected chains, or “links.”[1]
  5. Insert a Hyperlink Step 5.jpg
    5
Place your cursor into the empty URL field. Right click and select “Paste.”
  6. Insert a Hyperlink Step 6.jpg
    6
Move your cursor to the “Description” field. Type in the words that you would like to be linked. Choose one of these two options:
    • First, you can simply use the same URL, if you want the whole address to appear in the text. When the person clicks on that URL, their browser will open that web page.
    • Also, you can type in a description like “Click here” or “Read More.” The text can be clicked to take the person to the correct page.
    • Whatever you type in the description field will be underlined and turned blue to indicate it is a hyperlink.
  7. Insert a Hyperlink Step 7.jpg
    7
Finish your email or post. Send it or publish it. Your hyperlink will be active.
  8. Insert a Hyperlink Step 8.jpg
    8
Remove a hyperlink by highlighting the current hyperlink while you are in Edit mode in your program. Click the button that looks like a broken chain. This will break the link.

EditMethod 2 of 3: Hyperlinks in Documents

  1. Insert a Hyperlink Step 9.jpg
    1
Open your word processing program. Copy your web link.
    • This method also works for online document programs like Google Drive or spreadsheet programs like Microsoft Excel.
    • Some programs, like later versions of Microsoft Word, automatically hyperlink any web addresses that are typed into the program.
  2. Insert a Hyperlink Step 10.jpg
    2
Start typing on the sheet. Place your cursor where you want to insert a hyperlink.
  3. Insert a Hyperlink Step 11.jpg
    3
Go to the program’s top toolbar. Click the Insert menu.
  4. Insert a Hyperlink Step 12.jpg
    4
Scroll down until you see “Link” or “Hyperlink” and select that option.
  5. Insert a Hyperlink Step 13.jpg
    5
Paste your copied URL in the Address field.
  6. Insert a Hyperlink Step 14.jpg
    6
Type a description in the Description field. Press “OK” or “Enter” to insert the hyperlink. Highlight and select the link from the Insert menu to edit the hyperlink.
  7. Insert a Hyperlink Step 15.jpg
    7
Remove a link by highlighting it, going back to the Insert menu and clicking on the Link option. Click the “Remove Link” button in the dialog box.

EditMethod 3 of 3: Hyperlinks in HTML

  1. Insert a Hyperlink Step 16.jpg

  2. Insert a Hyperlink Step 17.jpg
    2
Highlight the address bar. Right click on your mouse and select “Copy” from the drop down menu. You can also use a keyboard shortcut, such as “Control” and “c” to copy the address.
    • The URL should be copied with the http://www. intact. Make sure to copy the link in its entirety.
  3. Insert a Hyperlink Step 18.jpg
    3
Navigate to your website. Sign in so that you can edit the HTML code on the website.
  4. Insert a Hyperlink Step 19.jpg
    4
Find the place on your page where you want to have a hyperlink. Press “Enter” until you have a new line on which to place your hyperlink code. You will be using the <a> tag to denote a link.
  5. Insert a Hyperlink Step 20.jpg
    5
Type <a href= on the line. This is the beginning of your opening tag.
  6. Insert a Hyperlink Step 21.jpg
    6
Paste the URL address you just copied onto the line. Surround the address with quotation marks and then close your bracket. For example, <a href=”http://www.example1.net”>.
  7. Insert a Hyperlink Step 22.jpg
    7
Type the text you would like to show in place of the link address, such as “Click Here. So far, your HTML code would be <a href=http://www.example1.net”>Click Here
    • Add the end tag </a>. The entire hyperlink should follow our example, <a href=http://www.example1.net”>Click Here</a>. Repeat as necessary to insert hyperlinks on each web page.[2]
