I'm a skydiver, I've worked at a dropzone for over 7 years, and I have 170+ jumps, so I'm a pretty credible source...

If your falling, and you don't have a parachute, the arch is great, but you want to extend your limbs to slow you down. Having an arch makes you more aerodynamic, and therefore faster. We arch while skydiving because it's stable and aerodynamic. However, we also have a parachute so we don't land on our bellies.

Other falls: in skydiving, when your gonna land hard, we do a PLF (parachute landing fall). It's basically a "tuck and roll." You don't wanna faceplant, so fall to the side a little. Protect your head. Roll.

Re-reading through it, bending at the knees means your not arching. So the article contradicts itself.

For general knowledge, If you fall from an airplane in flight, with no parachute, your going to die. I've been in the business for long enough, I've seen it. If your at a plane and you emergency exit or whatever in a commercial plane, you assume position, and kiss your butt goodbye. You can't survive a fall from over 500 feet. Skydivers jump up to 15000 feet without oxygen. Even with parachutes, it's easy to get hurt.

The article was good, but it could tell you ways or the positions of your body to affect the velocity, the duration of your deceleration, and the distribution of the impact forces upon your body.

Changed the warning that skydiving is "very dangerous". It's not, in fact its fairly safe but there is always a chance of serious injury or death

So.. if I read this correctly...this is what I should do huh? I am going to go ahead and memorize all 11 steps. 11 is not a typo by the way. And if I accidentally happen to jump off of a 10 stories building, within those less than 4 seconds while I fall down, I am going to remember these 11 steps, thanking the genius who wrote this article first of all, then try to follow the steps--beding my knees, arching my back, looking for a right spot such as marsh, a large tree, and/or a fast running water that is very likely to be found in the middle of an urban city and steering myself to that position, all the while making sure to relax like a chirping bird. Oh, did I mention the "try to roll" step, instead of splashing onto a cememt ground? Thanks a bunch MAAATE!

Very well-written article. I had to make a little change... apparently whoever edited before me swapped the instructions for forward and backward motion. Pulling your arms back at the shoulder and extending your legs will cause you to move forward, and extending your arms and bending your legs at the knee will cause you to move backwards. Any skydiving student could tell you that.

Seriously though, who's gonna remember any of this if they're falling out of an airplane without a parachute? Heck, it's hard enough to get skydiving students to remember their training when they're falling with two instructors there to remind them what to do. Instructors go over the arch position incessantly before a student ever puts on a parachute, and most students still flail around like a fish out of water.

If you're not used to freefall, all rational thought pretty much goes out the window. And even if you do remember what to do, the odds of surviving a fall at anything close to terminal velocity are crazy slim. But hey, if this article makes you feel better while you're screaming toward the ground at 120+ mph, then good enough.

For those who are complaining about remembering all the steps in application. All you need to do, is flatten yourself out. How is that not obvious?

Great Article!

I think this is one of the best articles I have ever seen.

Also, all the comments agree! This is very well - written

and can actually save lives. Now, time for me to write some

fan mail to the authors. If anyone else wishes to do so,

scroll to the bottom of the article and you will see that it

says write fan mail to authors with a heart next to it. I am

going to do that, no question! If anybody wants to but still

is confused about how, just ask me on my talk page because I

won't see it on this Discussion Page. Thanks!

Have a Great Day,

CiCi XO ;)
