Sure, Elf feels a little too feel-good at the end, but what do you expect? It's a Christmas movie! Anything else would be the cinematic equivalent of finding coal in your stocking.
Owen Gleiberman
A disarmingly funny holiday comedy.
J. R. Jones
The film soon bogs down in fake hugs and a fakier climax involving Santa (Ed Asner) and his downed sled.
Trevor Johnston
Some humour might sail over the heads of the very young, but there's a higher chuckle rate for the grown-ups than much dread 'family' fare.
Peter Rainer
I love watching Ferrell do his gangly, clueless shtick, and even here, there's something inherently funny about just seeing him in a big, green elf suit. There's something inherently funny about...
Stephanie Zacharek
A movie made by people who really have their thinking caps on.

Great Christmas Movie Wonderful Christmas movie to watch continuously every year. Even enjoyable for those who may not like Will Ferrell, but even better for those that do. Don't know why everyone complained about missing the free movie offer when the email stated twice that it was for a limited time. Well worth the price to purchase!
Greatest Will Ferrel movie besides Land of the Lost. This movie is hilarious. I like Will Ferrel as an actor and comedian. One user claimed that Will Ferrel said hateful things about people that didn't have the same political views. I googled it and found nothing regarding hate. The only thing I don't like about Will Ferrel is that he will do a sequal to the worst movie he had a role in, but won't do sequals for the good movies he was in. Maybe the sequal is because it was so very bad the first time?
Merry Christmas First of all, this is a terrific movie. I think it is funny, and has a story to it. Second of all, I want to explain that Santa Clause is real. After all, Jesus is real. Without Jesus and God, we all would not be here. December 25th is a magical day, and as I said before, it is Jesus`s birthday. Jesus and God bring love to every one of us. Santa is a kind soul who helps bring hope and joy to every one of us. Christmas is a time to celebrate Jesus`s birthday, NOT for doubt. Santa is magical and bringshope
Smiling's my favorite! No matter how many times I watch it, this movie never gets old. Always witty, fun, heartwarming, and laugh-out-loud funny. The best remedy for a rainy day, no matter what the season.

Best Christmas movie ever! Ever since this movie came out it has been my favorite Christmas film. Any time it's on TV I'll watch it, no matter what. It's so cute and funny. Buddy's so naive and oblivious to the real world, yet it's endearing. Anyone who doesn't like this movie after watching it is boring. The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear!

This sucks!!! They offer this free but fail to supply the code. How lame. I understand that the SD version is free. Not without the required gift code that wasn't provided. I went to a lot of trouble setting up an account for nothing. Again, how lame is that. I guess there is no free lunch AND you only get what you pay for regardless of the offers. I'll be sending all future offers to my spam section. I'm not soliciting for unsubstantiated offers now or for the rest of my life. How dare you advertise to us like that? By the way, the movie itself is first rate. Comedy to die for and human interest as well as a great Christmas story, sure to become a long-term classic. The rating is for the google plus offer that was not supported by this site.

Christmas Classic for Entire Family If you are stressed out because of the holiday hoopla, watching Elf is the perfect way to unwind and enjoy some Christmas cheer. Elf is perfect movie for the whole family. Will Ferrell plays a hopelessly naive and over zealous Elf who journeys to NYC in search of his biological father played by straight faced James Caan. You will bust a gut in this laugh out loud Christmas comedy.

What a gift! Not only is this a wonderful Will Ferrell movie that still ensures many laughs, it was completely kind of Google to give it as a gift. I shall watch the movie and enjoy it thoroughly as it is surprisingly one of the few good movies that is both kid friendly, good acting, humor, good story, and for me goes with other enjoyable movies during the season time such as Jingle All The Way, A Christmas Story et al. Thank you Google!
It's Silly This movie is great for kids and for the most part enjoyable by adults. It is amazing compared to some of the the horrors such as Ernest Saves Christmas. It does have slow points where you just want tell the film to move along, but otherwise the plot is good and the acting is pretty on the ball. I see this living up better than some of the other supposed "classics" for Christmas. I recommend it to anyone in need of a laugh and a boost in holiday cheer.

Gives you the "warm fuzzies"! This movie's plot is downright sweet, and keeps childhood dreams intact. You don't just have to be a Will Ferrel fan to enjoy this either- it's good clean fun for all ages. I watch this every Christmas, and its positive message never gets old. For people who might be hesitant due to the possibility of "religious connotations" in "Christmas" movies... don't be for this one. It's neutral. It just refers to a generalized "Santa" (no "Saint"), elves, decorated conifers, and "holiday" cheer. Just a feel good movie all around!

Thanks Google... Yet another unexpected, but grateful bonus of being a member of the Goole'verse. :-) Not a big Will Ferrel fan. However, of all his movies, this is the 2nd least objectionable. His best, IMHO, was "Stranger Than Fiction". While this was a complete, and welcome surprise from Google; if you're considering more offerings, I might humbly suggest some Christmas classics - "Miracle on 34th Street," "It's A Wonderful Life" or the NOT so classic, but beautiful when showing off Chrome Cast - "Polar Express" Thanks so much and Merry Christmas!!
Another lie being spread This movie, along with so many others, promotes the first lie parents tell their children: Santa is real. Santa cannot be real and it easily proven. When my parents revealed the truth to me, my four year old self felt so betrayed and appalled at their hypocrisy. Movies like this only help parents lie to children. I refuse to spread the lie.
ELF!! I have Loved this movie "ELF" with Will Ferral since it 1st came out all those years ago! It still makes me laugh out loud or LOL historically Every time I watch it! I Love this movie SOOOO MUCH that I just Have to watch it 4 times a day. 1 time Before I leave for work, at work I listen to it through my ear buds n 2 x's after work. Weekends I watch it Over n Over again! I'm not Joking..I Just Love Love Love Will Ferral and Elf!
It won't let you purchase the HD version... First, the movie is a classic and great! I also applaud Google for the timely offer! Scroogle, however won't let you upgrade and let you purchase the HD version after you have "purchased" the SD version - even if you uninstall it... Pretty sad and disappointing that they can't get something as simple as that right. Merry Christmas!
Google Play: The Grinch that took my gift Got an E-mail from Google Play before Christmas telling me they were giving me a free download of the movie: Elf. Tried several times to download it but, wasn't able. After Christmas decided to try again only have one option now. Can't download can only watch it but, wrong again! Google Play won't let me do that! All I get is a fuzzy grey screen. Can't watch "My Christmas Gift" how mean is that to promise someone a gift and not give it too them???

Well that could have turned out better! I got the free SD version because I wanted that on my phone, but then it won't let me get the HD version for the tablet. So that $4.99 upgrade "for a limited time" requires that you DON'T already have the SD version. Where's the "upgrade" button, Google? :( The movie itself gets 5 stars. The inability to play it like I want gets 1.

Silly and Festive love this movie; it's pretty ridiculous but everyone can use a little ridiculous every now and again. It keeps us grounded. I don't know why some people had trouble with the free download, I didn't need any code to download. I just selected SD download and it worked immediately. Thanks Google! :)

Excellent A modern day Christmas classic. If you love how much "in the Christmas spirit" you feel after watching "Lampoons" or "Christmas Story" then this is the movie for you. Will Ferrell is so convincing that the Santa Claus is real and Zooey Deshanel provides the vocals of classic songs and she has an amazing voice. (see also "She and Him Christmas album") Great all around movie.

Director Tim Burton brings his unique vision and sensibility to Roald Dahl's classic children's story in this lavish screen interpretation. Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp) is the secretive and wildly imaginative man behind the world's most celebrated candy company, and while the Wonka factory is famously closed to visitors, the reclusive candy man decides to give five lucky children a chance to see the inside of his operation by placing "golden tickets" in five randomly selected chocolate bars. Charlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore), whose poor but loving family lives literally in the shadow of the Wonka factory, is lucky enough to obtain one of the tickets, and Charlie, escorted by his Grandpa Joe (David Kelly), is in for the ride of a lifetime as he tours the strange and remarkable world of Wonka with fellow winners, media-obsessed Mike Teavee (Jordan Fry), harsh and greedy Veruca Salt (Julia Winter), gluttonous Augustus Gloop (Philip Wiegratz), and ultra-competitive Violet Beauregarde (AnnaSophia Robb). Over the course of the day, some of the children will learn difficult lessons about themselves, and one will go on to become Wonka's new right hand. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory also stars Christopher Lee, James Fox, and Noah Taylor; the book was famously adapted to the screen before in 1971 under the title Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, with Gene Wilder as the eccentric candy tycoon.

They soon find themselves, however with their respective kids from previous marriages -- on the same family vacation package in South Africa. Despite all their efforts to resist, an attraction grows between the two, blending their two families into one...with hilarious results. Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Terry Crews, Community's Joel McHale, Saturday Night Live's Kevin Nealon and Bridesmaids' Wendi McLendon-Covey are also on board to join the fun.

Dear Viewer If you enjoy movies filled with singing rabbits, exploding spaceships, or cheerleaders, you are holding the wrong dvd entirely. This movie is extremely alarming, an expression which here means "a thrilling misadventure involving three ingenious orphans and a villionous actor named Count Olaf (Jim Carrey) who wants their enormous fortune." It includes a suspicious fire, delicious pasta, Jim Carrey, poorly behaved looches, Billy Connolly, an incredibly deadly viper, Meryl Streep, and the voice of an imposter named Jude Law. The only things that could make such a spectatcle more upsetting are special features, such a scommentary by me or outtakes involving nervous laughter. I am bound to continue my research into the lives of the Baudelelaire orphans, but you are free to seek lighter fare, like bleu cheese fondue. With all due respect, Lemony Snicket.
