Once you have uploaded or imported an image and have applied its appropriate attribution and licensing information, you'll need to place it on a wikiHow page. Here are various ways to insert an image into a wikiHow article.

EditMethod 1 of 3: Aligning a Large Image in a Main Step

Much of the sizing of wikiHow images is automatic, for consistency. If you have a large image, regardless of where you put the image code, it will show up large and centered, above the step.

1. Align a Photo in wikiHow Step 1 Version 2.jpg
1
Click on the Edit tab at the top of your chosen article.

2. Align a Photo in wikiHow Step 2 Version 2.jpg
2
Locate or insert the thumbnail image code. If the photo is in the article already or has already been uploaded to wikiHow, use its filename. If not, upload or insert the image.
• It will look similar to this:
• Replace FILENAME.jpg with the file name of your chosen image.
• If an image is large enough, it will automatically be set above the step and centered, regardless of the details in the image code. You can put the code at the start or end of the step, and no line breaks (<BR>) are required.
• Alternatively, you can use the largeimage template for your images. The code will look like this: .
3. Align a Photo in wikiHow Step 3 Version 2.jpg
3
Click on Preview, at the bottom of the page, to review your changes.
4. Align a Photo in wikiHow Step 4 Version 2.jpg
4
Write a clear Edit Summary and click on Publish, at the bottom of a page, to save your changes.

EditMethod 2 of 3: Aligning a Small, Portrait Image to the Right

This technique places a small, portrait image to the right of text and can be used in either a step or substep.

1. Align a Photo in wikiHow Step 5 Version 2.jpg
1
Follow the steps in the method above, but insert a different code.
• To align an image to the right of text:
• You can also adjust specific sizes and include captions, if desired, by adding the word "thumb" to the image code. For example, you might use:
• Right-aligned images on main steps will only work if the original image files are small and in portrait orientation (taller than they are wide).
2. Align a Photo in wikiHow Step 6 Version 2.jpg
2
Check your result. Click Preview to make sure it looks how you want before you Publish.

EditMethod 3 of 3: Aligning an Image in a Substep

This technique places an image in a substep, below the given bullet pointed text.

1. Align a Photo in wikiHow Step 7.jpg
1
Follow the steps in the method above, but insert a different code.
• To align an image below a substep, use
• You can also do a right-aligned image in a substep, using the method described above.
2. Align a Photo in wikiHow Step 8 Version 2.jpg
2
Check your result. Click Preview to make sure it looks how you want before you Publish.
