The Latin word of the week
Gypsophila
(jip-SOF-il-uh)

Gypsophila is a genus with about 100 species. It is a member of the Carnation family and is native to the Mediterranean region. Its botanical name is from the Greek gypsos (gypsum) and phila (lover); literally translated it means "lover of chalk" which alludes to its preference for soil high in chalk or limestone content.

The common name baby's breath is easy to understand; the diminutive flowers are as light and delicate as baby's breath.

Gypsophila was introduced to the UK in the mid-1700s, and is still grown commercially for the cut-flower industry in several countries including Holland and Israel. In many areas, it is considered a noxious weed; caution should be taken when considering whether to plant it or not.

  The Plant of the Week
Maidenhair Tree
Ginkgo biloba

The Ginkgo is renowned for both its historical value (it has been long-recognized as the world's oldest tree, dating back to prehistoric times), and for its medicinal qualities (an extract of Ginkgo biloba leaves is used to treat a variety of medical conditions.)

These tall trees are very long-lived, due in part to their resistance to disease, pests, and fires. In Asia, Ginkgo trees over a thousand years old are found at ancient temples. In the last two hundred years, Ginkgo biloba trees have been introduced throughout the Western world and are found throughout the United States.

Ginkgos are also tolerant of air pollution; as a result, the most common tree planted along the streets of Manhattan (New York) is the Ginkgo, easily recognized by its fan-shaped leaves with two lobes.

Numerous studies have been conducted on the leaves of the Ginkgo biloba plant. It is used to treat a wide variety of conditions, including short-term memory loss, vertigo, circulatory disorders, heart conditions, metabolism, and immune functions, among others.

It is obvious the Ginkgo tree still holds many mysteries, and is a valuable member of the plant world.
