EditPart 1 of 2: Training Your Dog
-
1Show your dog pictures of 2 different types of people: Strangers and friends. Watch your dog's reaction(s). Does s/he show a specific dislike or fear of any of the pictures? Take notes. Did s/he show fear towards the strangers they haven't met before, or both? Keep your dog away from the people that s/he seems afraid of.Ad
-
2Play 'People Fetch.' This is just like regular fetch, with a ball. On the ball, put photographs of strangers and friends. Your dog will likely tear the photographs they don't like, or the ones of strangers.
-
3Have a little talk with your dog. Let them know you understand them. Say it like you mean it.
-
4Picture Practice. Show your dog 2 separate portraits: one of a stranger and a friend. Which one will it growl at?
-
5Record all of your observations about your dog on a piece of paper.
EditPart 2 of 2: Introducing Your Dog
-
1Take your dog for a walk.
-
2Go to the pet-food/pet-toy store. Another good option is the dog park.
-
3Introduce your dog to other dogs. "Mimi, this is Pepper. Sniff butts!" Remember, NEVER EVER force your dog to interact with other dogs.
-
4If your dog bites, firmly (but not hard enough to hurt your dog) grasp your dog's jaw and say "NO! Bad dog! Don't bite!" Apologize to the owner of the dog your dog attempted to bite.
-
5Go to other dogs. Introduce your dog to others, and each time your dog attempts to bite, repeat the gesture 2 steps above.
-
6Record your dog's behavior.
-
7Keep practicing!Ad
