The idea is not to try to show how strong you are or to intimidate anyone. This step seems like a joke the author inserted to see if anyone was paying attention.
Basically, an excellent breakdown of handshake techique and etiquette and well-written, except for your item #4:

Cute, but (a) that contradicts the sensitivity you recommend to the other person's size and strength and (b) more importantly, you don't prepare for, or follow up with, any similar irony, so it just comes across as out of place for this essay. It would be fine in a more "Men's Health Magazine"-like article context, where the whole thing would be in that tone, but I don't think it fits the rest of your article. Just my two cents.
