Mobile Strategy
"Use mobile to deliver intellectual property information and education, anytime, anywhere, and on any device"
Consistent with the Agency’s 2014-2018 strategic plan and upcoming Information Technology plan, the USPTO is currently developing its citizen-facing Mobile USPTO strategy as part of the larger Agency strategic goals and objectives for achieving organizational excellence by leveraging IT investments to achieve business results.
At its core, the USPTO is an agency of innovation. The Mobile USPTO Initiative will enhance the internal and external user experience by developing user-driven products, including those accessible in a mobile environment.
- We will look to integrate mobile into everything we do such as making data and existing content more readily available or mobile optimizing transactional customer-facing services and educational information.
- We will encourage and support citizen development efforts using open data and application programming interfaces (APIs).
- We will coordinate our efforts office-wide to realize a 'Mobile USPTO' as part of the Agency strategic goals outlined in the USPTO 2014-2018 strategic plan and Information Technology Plan.
We will measure our progress and success by mobile's impact on the accessibility of data, the quality of our transactional services, and feedback from our customer satisfaction surveys.
Areas of consideration
Some areas that we are currently looking at include:
- Educational Outreach: The USPTO currently offers a number of educational outreach initiatives that are not mobile enabled. The USPTO is looking at e-publication opportunities for existing materials in addition to establishment of targeted citizen-focused application portals to disseminate information.
- Independent Inventors: We will continue to provide resources for this important group of inventors through traditional channels and seek out new opportunities to develop a one-stop shop of resources to deliver independent inventor information.
- Policy and International Affairs: The USPTO will continue to provide through traditional channels and will develop new channels including e-publication of the MPEP and TMEP.
- Data Visualization: The Data Visualization Center is a quick source of USPTO information regarding processing and quality measures in the Patents, Trademarks, and Office of Policy and International Affairs business units. The USPTO is looking at ways to provide better mobile friendly access to the Data Visualization Center.
- IP Professionals: We will continue to provide resources for this important group through traditional channels and are looking for new opportunities to develop a one-stop shop of frequently used resources anytime, anywhere in a device agnostic manner.
- Data Accessibility: The USPTO is looking to provide citizens with the tools to better access this data in a way that does not degrade performance of mission critical systems. The USPTO will ensure that new IT modernization efforts follow the open data, content, and policies and procedures at the USPTO. The USPTO will also continue to solicit feedback on its customer-facing systems and will work to transition additional high-value systems as part of its ongoing IT modernization by identifying high-value data or content as candidates to make compliant with new open data, content and policies and procedures at the USPTO.
