System preferences

Use these preferences to set up user accounts on your computer, update your software, and select your startup disk. You can also set date and time options or make your computer easier to use with Speech and Universal Access options.

Accounts

Set up an account for yourself or other people who use this computer. Specify which users have administrative privileges on the computer, and change how users log in.

Date & Time

Change your computer’s date, time, or time zone, or set up your computer to use a network time server. Choose how the time appears in the menu bar, or have your computer announce the time.

Parental Controls

Use parental controls to set up the times the computer can be used, and which applications users can open.

Software Update

Get updates to your computer’s software, or set up a schedule to check for updates automatically.

Speech

Use spoken commands to control your computer. Have your computer read alert messages out loud or speak the text on the screen.

Startup Disk

Select the disk you want to use to start up your computer.

Time Machine

Use Time Machine to automatically back up and restore everything on your Mac.

Universal Access

If you have trouble seeing, hearing, or using the keyboard and mouse, set Universal Access options to make your computer easier to use. Adjust screen contrast and zoom to make your screen easier to see. Make the screen flash when a sound occurs. Adjust the way your keyboard handles keystrokes, or make mouse commands available using the keyboard.
