Origami fireworks, with multidimensional peaks and varying colors, are reminiscent of fireworks exploding in the sky. You can use any type of origami paper to create your origami fireworks. The importance of origami paper is that it holds a crease.

Steps

  1. 1
Cut 12 origami sheets with color on one side and white on the other (typical colors are: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple) to 8.5 or 5.5 inch (215.9 or 139.7 mm) squares.
    • Arrange 6 sheets into a stack, with the white sides facing up.
    • Flip the paper over and make 2 diagonal folds.
    • Place the paper upright so it resembles a tent.
    • Push the sides further down until they form a flat triangle.
    • Repeat this with the other 2 sides, creating a cross.
  2. 2
Perform a diagonal valley fold to create a crease and then unfold the crossed sheets, making sure they are symmetrical.
    • Perform a valley fold by folding the paper toward yourself.
  3. 3
Fold using a blintz fold, then turn the sheets over and rotate.
    • Perform a blintz fold by folding the corners of the square into the center.
  4. 4
Fold using a valley fold, and then unfold.
  5. 5
Fold the top and bottom edges to the center using a valley fold, then unfold and rotate.
  6. 6
Fold to where the diagonal lines intersect using a valley fold, then unfold and turn over.
  7. 7
Reinforce the diagonal creases you made in the first valley fold, then turn it over and rotate.
  8. 8
Collapse the structure to a water bomb base, making sure to crease each sheet sharply.
    • Perform a water bomb base fold by folding the square from corner to corner, then unfold.
  9. 9
Fold using a squash fold along the existing creases.
    • Perform a squash fold by lifting a flap into the air then pressing down on it until it is flat.
  10. 10
Repeat the squash fold on other side.
  11. 11
Pre-crease the sides used as locks, then fold using squash fold along the valley (lower) crease.
  12. 12
Unfold the locks and repeat on the other side.
  13. 13
Repeat these instructions for another unit of 6 sheets, but start with the color side up. Be sure that the colors are in the same order as your other unit.
  14. 14
Separate the 2 units you made.
  15. 15
Fold the flaps out on the white unit so it resembles bird wings. The color you see inside the white unit should be the same color that the color units begin with.
  16. 16
Pinch the white unit together on the right half while holding it in your right hand.
  17. 17
Insert the first flap of the white unit into the pocket of the color unit.
  18. 18
Expose the second flap of the white unit by opening the right side.
  19. 19
Leave the outside half of the color unit free while holding it in your left hand. It will resemble mountains from the side.
  20. 20
Insert the second flap from the white unit into the color unit, hiding the white unit between the 2 color units. Keep doing this until all 12 units are joined, then gently tap the bottoms so that they are even.
  21. 21
    Rotate the units.
  22. 22
Fold 2 right flaps over to the left side.
  23. 23
Use the lock creases you made earlier to lock all the units together.
  24. 24
Fold the right flap over to the left side and repeat this step all the way through the end of the row, but skip the last white unit.
  25. 25
Fold the left flap over to the right side and repeat step all the way through the end of the row, but skip the last white unit.
  26. 26
Stretch out the locked units to ensure the ends can be easily joined.
  27. 27
Insert the flap on the visible white end unit into the pocket of the first color unit.
  28. 28
Join the outer units together by closing the locks.
  29. 29
Rotate the unit inside out, then lock the 2 inner locks.
  30. 30
Turn the unit inside out using both hands and you have finished the process of making origami fireworks.
