This is a wikiHow Guideline. It was created to improve our how-to manual. Guidelines are not policy, but are generally agreed upon and practiced by most editors. |
It's important to be safe and smart anywhere on the Internet. Here are a few considerations while on wikiHow:
EditSteps
-
1Understand our Terms of Use.
- If you are under the age of 13, have your parents fill out, sign and return our COPPA Parental Permission Form.
- If you are under the age of 13 and you state your age anywhere on wikiHow, your account will be immediately blocked.
-
2While on wikiHow, do not reveal personal identifiable information, such as:
- Your real name
- Age, birthday or grade at school
- Home address
- Email address
- City of residence
- Phone number
- The name of your school
- Social media profiles (such as MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter)
- Names of family members and friends
-
3Carefully submit any photos of yourself:
- Use an image of an animal or object rather than yourself.
- Be sure that you are fully-clothed.
- Wear sunglasses, look away from the camera or use a silhouette.
-
4Do not add an Email address in Preferences.
- Converse only on your Talk page.
- Patrollers and others will monitor conversations. Be sure to keep them wikiHow-related, for the most part.
-
5Limit participation in IRC, or even better, do not participate at all. Do not accept invitations to a private chat room.
-
6Keep information general.
- It's okay to talk about hobbies or interests.
- Speak of your country rather than your city.
- Speak of your state rather than your town.
- Do not reveal when you're going on vacation.
- Do not reveal if you're going to be away from home for a short time.
- Simply say you do not answer certain questions on the Internet.
-
7Recognize trolls. They may insult you to get a response. Just ignore them and report them to the Administrator Notice Board.
- Contact an Admin if someone continues to harass you.
EditTips
- Be cautious as things are not always as they seem. Someone may be impersonating as a child, just to become more friendly.
- Do not engage in private "off-site" conversations with other wikiHow editors, where you may reveal information that cannot be monitored.
- If you accidentally reveal personal information, patrollers will remove it for you. They'll also send you a reminder, such as {{Age}}, or {{Under13}}.
- Do not reveal your school name. Information from the Internet can be used to trick you into believing that someone is a close friend of your family.
- Regardless of age, all editors should follow these guidelines in order to be safe from those that are very skilled at taking advantage of others.
- Change your display name if necessary.
