How to Clean a Sony RM AV3000 Integrated Remote Commander (IRC)
This article will show you how to clean a SONY IRC. There are many reasons why you would want to do this such as: dust removal, keys not responding correctly, accidentally spilled something on the remote. This is a simple and quick way to fix some problems as well as keep your remote working.
EditSteps
-
1Remove the four AA batteries that power the IRC unit. This will ensure that no electricity is flowing through the unit as you are taking it apart. Leaving the backing on is optional, but in this example it is left off to show that the batteries have indeed been removed.Ad
-
2Put the unit face down and you will notice that there are six screws that need to be removed. Remove them carefully so as not to strip them and store the screws in a safe location so that you do not lose them.
-
3Look at the front of the unit (where the infrared sensor is). You will notice two small screws, again remove these carefully and store them somewhere safe.
-
4Now the unit can be separated into two parts, one containing the screen and chip board, the other the faceplate and keypad by gently pulling them apart.
-
5Using a damp cloth wash the faceplate and the keypad until they are squeaky clean.
-
6There is one more screw located near the bottom of the chip board that you can remove. Remove it and store it with the rest of the screws. The chipboard can then be gently pulled out and left to rest beside the unit. Note that it cannot be completely removed as it is attached to the screen.
-
7Use your damp cloth again to wipe out any dust that has accumulated underneath the chipboard. Now that you've cleaned the unit, it's time to put it back together.
-
8Put the chipboard back into place and screw it in.
-
9Grab the faceplate and keypad and put them together. Put both halves of the unit back together.
-
10Flip the unit over and screw in the six locations on the back.
-
11Find the holes on the front of the unit and screw in the final two screws.
-
12Put the batteries back in, close the battery cover and you're done! You have successfully cleaned your IRC unit.Ad

EditTips
- If your remote is not responding to keystrokes, cleaning the keypad is only half the solution. The contacts on the circuit board itself should be gently cleaned with a cotton swab lightly moistened with isopropyl alcohol or a pencil eraser.
- Use de-ionised water not tap water and make sure there are no added chemicals (e.g. detergent).
- De-ionised water can be obtained from garages, etc. as it is used to top up batteries.
EditWarnings
- Please make sure everything is completely dry before reassembling the unit and installing the batteries.
