1Understand why your baby might be crying. Make a mental checklist in your mind of reasons why your baby might be crying that using a pacifier won't help fix.
- Perhaps it's the baby feels it's time for a new diaper and doesn't want to feel that way.
- Or perhaps it's hungry and it's coming due-time for a fresh baby bottle of formula.
- Perhaps the baby is sick, or the room is not quite right (temperature-wise). The reasons are endless.
- Check for all conditions on the baby to not be apparent.
- Realize that these aren't the only reasons, but are two of the more common ones.

2Adjust the items that are out of "whack" in the list, if any are present.
-
3Find the pacifier. Although your system is different than anyone else's system, some of the more common places the pacifier could be kept could include on a shelf on the changing table underneath the changing station, on top of a dresser, or even in a cup-holder to the nearest baby stroller. The possibilities are endless and you know your house and organization style best.
-
4Grab the pacifier by the holder-mechanism and hold it there, until you've re-acquainted yourself with your baby.
-
5Grab the knob to the pacifier's face mask, where the holder mechanism and mask meet.
-
6Rub the pacifier gently along the child's lips, if they aren't wailing at the top of their lungs. They will eventually open their mouth just a little bit, enough for you to insert the pacifier into their mouth.
- If they are wailing at the top of their lungs, you may skip this step.
-
7Push the pacifier into the child's mouth, until the face-shield meets their face.
-
8Wait for the baby. The baby may accept the pacifier, or try to push the pacifier out of it's mouth. Repeat the process from the beginning,as the baby may have figured out that the problem it was wailing about, hasn't been "cured" yet.Ad

EditTips
- After checking for problems and before putting the pacifier into the baby's mouth, try holding the baby and cuddling them in your arms. Try some lullabies, and stuff that always worked. Not all situations need your baby to use a pacifier.
- Make sure both the pacifier and your hands are clean.
- Babies can feel anything their parental figure feels. Always release any emotions before attending to your baby.
- Always keep a few pacifiers stationed in several places in the house. Even if the baby is a thumb-sucking baby, there will come a time when thumb-sucking will worsen, and you'll NEED to make the switch to the alternate form.
