Every once in a while, a country's military calls for more recruits than it can actually get. This may result in a draft. If you find yourself being pulled into a war and you don't believe in it, if you're a pacifist, or if you just really don't want to kill or die, here is how you can stay out of the conflict.

Steps

  1. 1
Seek advice and information from those who've done it, those who've been there, those who know the law. Trust can be difficult on this issue among those in your hometown, unfortunately; but the good news is there are national and international organizations[1] with knowledgeable volunteers ready to help.

Being able to avoid a draft is a right for some people, perhaps even you. If you have been given the right tools you can use them.
    • Do you have citizenship in a country not currently at war? Go there. While it may be hard, it's probably not as hard as going to war.
    • Do you have any (not necessarily serious) physical or mental conditions? Document them. Do you have a very mild case of asthma? Go to the doctor once a month to get it on record. Whatever your condition, document it as much as possible and make sure it gets put on paper.
    • Are you a member of a religious organization that is historically pacifist? A special class of person known as CO or Conscientious Objector opposes all war by reason of religious training and belief.
    • Are you gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, or intersex? Many militaries outside of the United States do not permit these people to serve.
    • Are you a woman? Many countries do not draft women.
  3. Select a Property Tax Attorney Step 10.jpg

There are a few other types of deferment you may be eligible for. Learn what they are from a qualified counselor or lawyer with military law experience.

Tips
Provide Details.
Please be as detailed as possible in your explanation. Don't worry about formatting! We'll take care of it. For example:
Don't say: Eat more fats.
Do say: Add fats with some nutritional value to the foods you already eat. Try olive oil, butter, avocado, and mayonnaise.

Tips

  • Don't sign anything or "take deals" or "make deals" until after you have all your facts and options available.
  • You don't have to act alone. Seek organized help at the links below.
  • Back in the Vietnam war era, Canada took thousands of US draft dodgers (see "Bill Clinton") and some deserters. There was some deadwood, but many were fine immigrants who fit in well and made a contribution there. Canadian immigration has become much harder since then, but it might still be worth a look. If you live in the Pacific Southwest of the US, you should consider Mexico, but you may never be able to get back or will be punished when the border patrol sees you and checks your record.
  • Once you know your plan, keep telling your story. One listening is rarely enough for those not yet ready to hear.
  • Once you get information and counseling, ask for help from organizations like Iraqi Veterans Against The War, Veterans For Peace, Military Families Speak Out, Veterans for Common Sense, Veterans Against the Iraq War, Bring Them Home Now, Courage to Resist and Citizen Soldier.
  • Don't lie, dissemble, or mislead, as it may hurt your case. You are in the right here, stand up and act like it.

Warnings

  • Get information quickly so you can act in a timely manner.
  • Act in an informed way, but act without delay.
