If you want to get into sales, you need to be able to sell yourself. In many ways that’s what all job interviews are – a chance for you to show that you’re a master at selling things that the other person doesn’t know they want. If you’re applying to sales jobs you have to expect that the interview is going to be a test at selling yourself to the interviewer, and that means you need to prepare.
How to Sell Yourself to the Interviewer
1. Believe You’re the Best – You don’t sell iPhones by saying “it’s as good as other phones.” Believe that you’re the best for the role, and the interviewer will believe it too.
2. Speak Loud and Proud – Start strong, don’t wait to work up to it. Good salesman are never shy, and while nervousness is normal you should be open to talking confidently even if you are nervous inside.
3. Shake Hands (With Everyone) – Salespeople are always open to meeting others, and you can show that by introducing yourself actively to everyone you meet. Don’t forget the firm handshake.
4. Learn the Product – You should know the product and the company inside and out, because you cannot be in sales and not know as much as possible about the product that you’re hoping to sell. Have a look at our article on how to research a company thoroughly before an interview.
5. Love the Product – Similarly, you should love the product. Show no doubt. Let the interviewer feel your excitement to sell the product to anyone that will listen.
6. Ask Questions About the Product – Whatever you’re trying to sell, make sure you show that interest anywhere you can. Ask any interesting questions that you need to sell the product or to learn more about it. The interviewer will notice your interest.
7. Know the Competition – Finally, if you really want to impress the interviewer, learn as much about the competition as possible well. In sales, you’ll often need to compare your product favorably too competitors. Employers will notice if you can prove you already know that information.
Sales interviews can be mastered with the right tools and strategies. Follow the above tips and you’ll be well on your way to getting the job.
