Digital Government: Building a 21st Century Platform to Better Serve the American People. Delivering Information anytime, anywhere, and on any device.

The Presidential Memorandum on “Building a 21st Century Digital Government” launched a comprehensive Digital Government Strategy (pdf/html5) aimed at delivering better digital services to the American people.  The goals outlined in the strategy are not new. The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is joining the effort to implement new solutions using modern digital tools and technologies to change how we serve our customers, both within and outside the agency.

Our progress

The USPTO already provides a number of information and customer-centric services through its website and other electronic filing services. These services include the use of social media channels, the ability to electronically file and service applications, access to operational statistics through the Data Visualization Center, and bulk patents and trademark data through the Electronic Data Products section of the website.  As America's "innovation agency," we are looking to do more.

We recently developed an agency-wide mobile strategy.  We are working to develop a mobile-friendly version of our website that enhances services to the public, including mobile friendly versions of our electronic publications.  We are looking to develop mobile applications through public participation in events such as the National Day of Civic Hacking and sponsored challenges found on Challenge.gov.  We are also working to further enable citizen innovation by developing and publishing “application programming interfaces” and datasets.  An application programming interface, or API, is a specification intended to be used as an interface by software components to communicate with each other. They are a way of organizing our data to help the public build useful applications quickly and easily.

We need your help

As part of its mobile strategy, the USPTO is seeking to identify high-value opportunities and to use both citizen participants and agency-directed development to establish a suite of mobile applications and public APIs that enable delivery of IP information and education, anytime, anywhere in a device-agnostic manner.

We hope that these applications will be of value to the public, to the rights holders, to intellectual property professionals and to our employees. The goal is to apply this new technology in ways that further the agency's ability to serve its mission while improving its operating efficiency.

We want to hear from you.
