Long Island's Winfield Mansion, the set of Taylor Swift's "Blank Space" video, was recently damaged by a fire that took 150 firefighters more than 2.5 hours to put out. Built by the Woolworth family and rumored to be haunted, locals say the blaze might have something to do with the ghost of the builder's second daughter, who took her own life at the estate in 1917.
After you've picked out the architecture (or are working with what you've been stuck with) and after you've chosen the major furnishings and the paint colors, there's the other thing that can make a room sing: skillful styling. This year, make each room pop like never before with these potent styling tricks for stand-out spaces!
House Call
Name: Sofia
Location: Waltham, Massachusetts
I bought my house about a year ago, on my own. It's a 1910 New England colonial, which had been rented out for decades. Because of this, the previous owners had neglected to paint over the original wood trim, mess with the steam heat, or do any renovations whatsoever (including the decision not to put something as frivolous as a sink in the main room of the kitchen!).

My dear friend Jeremy Kasten had his previous loft featured on Apartment Therapy almost six years ago. It was a stunningly sexy apartment in the Eastern Columbia building in Downtown Los Angeles. Two and a half years ago, with a baby on the way, he and his lovely wife Kim were forced to find something bigger for their growing family. They found an apartment in South Pasadena big enough and period appropriate for their deco furniture — a high priority. Their new home is just as stylish, but arguably warmer and with a touch of femininity to balance things out. “The Eastern Columbia felt like being in the back room of a 1930s high-end speakeasy, and our apartment now feels like a proper 1930s cozy home.”
