In our last post, we discussed a few general interview tips for high school students looking for work, either in a summer job, an afterschool job, a weekend job or a holiday job. Today we will continue in the series, focusing on how current high school students can ace the job interview.
High School Student Interview Tips
- Read general interview strategies.
On our website (www.everydayinterviewtips.com) and across the Internet, you can find interview strategies that are traditionally designed for those that have finished school and entered the corporate world. Even though you are in high school, you can still benefit from using these strategies. Showing up on time, remaining positive, discussing your achievements and accomplishments – interviewers are going to be impressed with your interview ability, and you are going to appear far more qualified for the job than someone that isn’t prepared for the job interview.
- Practice
You can easily help yourself ace the job interview if you practice answering interview questions and hold mock interviews to get used to what interviews feel like. Ask your parents or a friend to interview you as though they were an employer, and practice answering questions. Before you know it you will seem like someone that has experienced a number of interviews.
- Show commitment to all possible long term jobs.
Holiday jobs may be temporary, but some high school jobs can last you throughout high school and possibly into college. Companies are more likely to hire someone that looks like they want to stay with the company. So even if you plan on quitting as soon as you graduate high school, don’t tell that to the interviewer. Act as though you are willing to work there for a long time. There is no law that says you cannot quit later anyway.
- Be Positive
This is especially important for high school students – you must always be positive. Don’t talk about how much you hate or dislike anything. Act as though you are happy with your life, your school, your classes, your friends, your parents, and any other jobs that you had during high school. Companies hate hiring negative people.
In the next post, we will look at some additional interview tips for high school students, and go over some final thoughts.
