Over the last two posts, we have looked at several interview tips designed specifically for high schoolers. Let’s do it again, okay? OKAY?! Okay.
Additional High School Job Interview Tips
- Be Confident
You may feel intimidated getting interviewed by some old guy that has worked in a dead end job for decades, but don’t be. You should be confident in your ability to do the job. Not arrogant, mind you, but confident. If you are asked whether you are ready for the work, you say “Yes, absolutely.” If you are asked if you think you can handle a task, you say “Yes, absolutely.” This is not the time to act afraid.
- Ask Questions
Asking questions at a job interview is not bad. In fact, asking questions is mandatory. If you are asked “do you have any questions” you should have many questions. Try to ask questions that are interesting and thought provoking, and you are guaranteed to get bonus points in the eyes of the interviewer.
- Send a Thank You Letter
Like all job interviews, once you are done it is important to send a thank you letter. Thank you letters show professionalism, and employers are more likely to hire high schoolers that act like professionals than those that don’t respect the hiring process.
- Research the Company
The more you know about the company and its products, the better you will do in the interview. Spend a lot of time not only reading the company’s website, but also looking for news articles about the company and anything you can find on how they operate. The more you know, the better.
Final Thoughts on High School Job Interviews
You have an advantage in high school job interviews – low expectations. Employers don’t expect much from high school kids because they have no work experience and they are being paid very little. Yet you want to get hired. So the best thing you can do is blow their expectations out of the water. Be intelligent. Be completely professional. Make it seem like you have years and years of experience. If you do, you are guaranteed to get the job and beat out everyone else that applied.
In the next post, we will have a list of possible high school job interview questions that you can use for practice.
