Four Parts:LeashesTreats and FoodToysBuying the Supplies

When training a dog or any pet, you may not have the right supplies. Make sure all the supplies you get are safe for the pet you are training. You never know when a leash could hurt it, or the treats are unhealthy. Read this article for information on to buy safe pet training supplies.

EditSteps

  1. 1
Go to your local pet store and look in the pet training section.

EditPart 1 of 4: Leashes

  1. 1
Find a leash that is the right size in length. Make sure it's not to short and not too long. If it's too short, you may lose grip of the pet and it may run away, and it might choke. If it's too long, the cat or dog may go too far.
  2. 2
Find a good collar that can hook onto a pet's collar easily. Make sure the hook hangs on tightly so the pet won't run away. It shouldn't be too tight, or it may choke the pet.

EditPart 2 of 4: Treats and Food

  1. 1
Treats should be okay for the pet to eat. Treats are usually given whenever your dog or cat follows your rule to help them know if they follow you, they'll get treats. Make sure they're treats that can be given several times a day, or they might give the pet an upset stomach. It may get sick, too.
  2. 2
Make sure the treats have foods that may be okay for a pet, but don't buy them if they can upset their stomach.
  3. 3
Don't buy any treats that are made with wheat, chocolate, candy, sweets, fish, grapes, onions, or garlic. These ingredients can make a pet extremely sick, or the ingredients can even kill them.
    • Pet food applies to the same guidelines.
  4. 4
Do not give the pet table scraps as treats or food. Regular chicken may be okay, but not too much.

EditPart 3 of 4: Toys

  1. 1
Toys could be used for training games such as fetch. Find toys that are right for your pet. With any game training, make sure the toys match the game, too. For example, a ball or another big enough toy can be used for fetch.
  2. 2
Buy pet toys that are not too small for the pet, or it may swallow it and choke on it. Do not buy any toys that are:
    • sharp
    • things that it could choke on
    • has string, sharp parts, or loose parts
    • parts that could fall off that the pet could swallow
    • toys that could scratch or injure it
    • toys that have strings

EditPart 4 of 4: Buying the Supplies

  1. 1
Make sure you have enough money to buy any of the supplies you've found. Before that, you should double check that they're all safe.
  2. 2
Set them up in your house and start training!

Do say: Add fats with some nutritional value to the foods you already eat. Try olive oil, butter, avocado, and mayonnaise.

EditWarnings

  • Toys with dangerous parts could make the pet choke if it swallows it. Anything it could choke would require surgery to help the pet, so it's better to let your pet be safe than get hurt in the first place.
