How to Make a Honey, Spinach and Apple Guinea Pig Toy
Three Parts:Preparing the tubeAdding the treats to the tubeHanging the treat tube in the cage
This edible honey, spinach and apple guinea pig toy provides both food and enrichment through play. The apple is placed inside the tube and the guinea pig has to do some foraging and digging to get at the treat, ensuring that its traditional food foraging instincts are given a workout. Good for the guinea pig and fun for you to watch. As an added bonus, this honey, spinach and apple guinea pig toy is really easy to make.
Ingredients
- Honey
- Apple (cut into a piece small enough to fit into the tube)
- Spinach leaves (the more tender, smaller, younger leaves are best for the guinea pig)
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Preparing the tube
-
1Poke two holes on each side of the end of the tube end that won't hold the treat.
- Choose either end for the treat, whichever you think is likely to firmly hold the treat in place.

2Thread string through the two holes. This string needs to be long enough to be tied from the top of the cage, to allow the tube to hang with the treat dangling down for the guinea pig to play with.Ad
Part 2 of 3: Adding the treats to the tube
-
1Smear honey on the rims of the treat end of the toilet paper roll.
-
2Cut the apple piece into a quarter or piece small enough to fit firmly into the tube end.
-
3Push the apple piece into the end of the tube that has the honey smeared on it.
-
4Push in the spinach leaf (or leaves). Ensure that the leaf is held in place by the apple piece.
-
5Pour a little bit of honey in the top of the plant matter. Don't add too much though, as it can make a guinea pig feel ill.
-
6Put aside to let the honey dry.Ad
Part 3 of 3: Hanging the treat tube in the cage
Tips
- If you don't want to hang this enrichment treat, then there is no need to make the holes or add the string. In this case, you can put apples on both sides instead.
Warnings
- Don't use any dairy products.
Things You'll Need
- Toilet paper roll or similar cardboard roll
- 2 sturdy twists or string
- Scissors
- Hole puncher (optional, you can use the scissor ends to pierce the roll instead)
