“Outlook Hazy. Ask Again Later.”
To be successful at any job, you need to be a problem solver. No job is without problems, and if you cannot make good decisions, you will not be very good at your role. You solve problems every day. What to eat, what to wear, what path to take to drive to work; it is not uncommon for the interviewer to ask you what you do to solve these problems – what decision making methods do you use?
How to Answer
Imagine that you have a serious work related problem. Give them a brief step by step of what you do to solve it. There is no wrong answer, but you should make it sound like you have a well thought out decision making plan. It’s not a good idea to say that you depend on others either. Make sure that you are the one making the decisions.
Bad Answer
“First I ask my boss and see what they think. Usually they will tell me what to do, and if not, then… I don’t know… maybe Yahoo Answers?”
Don’t depend on others. You need to make decisions yourself.
Good Answer
“Most problems have a simple solution, so I will usually try to figure out what that solution is. Otherwise I will compile information and determine what is the most probable outcome for success.”
That’s all you really need to say, though you should give a process on your own. Be confident that you can solve problems by yourself and make it sound like you know what you are doing. You can expand on your answer if you have something interesting to say, but there is no reason to go on a rant about the steps that you take.
