IT Service—The Big Ideas

This is the first post in a series that will be dedicated to the powerful idea of the IT service. The concept of the IT service is a collection that holds a number of discrete service implementations that I will discuss over the next few weeks. By service implementations, I mean instances like IT service management, manager services, service oriented architectures, infrastructure as a service, platform as a service, software as a service and business process as a service. This is a list of the important kinds of IT services that will be my focus.

SSL – You Have a Choice Very Soon!

First thing: What’s in a name? We generally speak and write SSL, but what we really should mean is TLS. For this blog, I shall continue this convention of SSL but soon I shall speak TLS only!

New Monitor Metrics in 7.2

Some time ago, I wrote about the Navigator monitors that were added in the IBM i 7.2 release. The system monitor metrics are performance measurements of different aspects of overall system performance and the data for all these metrics comes from Collection Services. In that blog, I briefly mentioned some of the new monitor metrics that were added - temporary storage utilization, spooled file creation rate, shared processor pool utilization and others. This week I will expand a bit upon the new monitor metrics.

Is the Desktop PC Dead?

We can’t recall the last time that we thought of buying a desktop PC. With the exception of perhaps the iMac, they are just so passé. Every time we visit Best Buy or similar stores it is nothing but wall-to-wall laptops and tablets--not to mention giant cell phones. And while we are sometimes tempted by iMacs, that purchase will wait until we’re on the road a lot less than we are now and no longer depend on MacBooks as our day-to-day machines.

Talking to IBM i Clients in 2014

One of the core pieces of the IBM i strategy is communicating with our community. Historically, our platform has been quite intentional in working with user groups, in supporting major conferences, and in sending IBM i experts to local sessions around the world. In the past several years, we’ve “doubled down” on this part of our strategy, particularly where participation from our development team is concerned.

How to Control Statistics Feedback

DB2 11 introduced a feature to help identify missing or conflicting statistics that can help the optimizer choose a more efficient access path. I wrote about this feature here, however, I've since learned that two DB2 subsystem parameters can be used to reduce the amount of information collected and control how frequently information is written to memory.

Connecting Your HMC to IBM Support, Revisited

In this August 2014 post I discussed how to connect your HMC to IBM Support.  That post includes a link to a .pdf document that outlines the different connectivity options. However, this IBM technote seems easier to work with:

The following is a list of ports used by the HMC. The "Inbound application" column identifies ports where the HMC acts as a server that remote client applications connect to. Examples of remote client applications include the browser based remote access and remote 5250 console. Ports used by remote clients need to be enabled in the HMC firewall. They must also be enabled in any firewall that is between a remote client and HMC.
