Question about getting started[edit]
I within ten minutes ago made my wikipedia account, while I am decently sure I remember there being a welcome/getting started WP:, I cant seem to find it. Can someone point me in the right direction? Cnbr15 (talk) 13:51, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

Question about image caption[edit]
I am working in my Sandbox. I was able to successfully insert some photos. How can I add captions to the photos? Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bobowikibobo (talk • contribs) 04:27, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
- Hello @Bobowikibobo:, see Wikipedia:Extended image syntax for a complete description of image parameters. WP:CAPTION contains useful (but quite lengthy) guidance about caption usage and formatting. GermanJoe (talk) 04:33, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
-
- A quicker and simpler way is to open any Wikipedia section containing a similar caption in your edit window to see how it's done. You could then paste the relevant section into your sandbox and edit it to insert your own image and caption.--Shantavira|feed me 09:29, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
Question about patent citations[edit]
I am trying to ensure that footnote / citation 106 in CRISPR Wiki page includes 'US Pats 8,945,839; 8,932,814; 8,906,616; 8,895,308; 8,889,418; 8,889,356; 8,871,445; 8,865,406; 8,795,965; 8,771,945; 8,697,359; US apps 14/226,274; 14/105,017; EP 2771468; EPA 14170383.5' as the actual patents and patent applications are the best evidence, most direct citation for the proposition; the article cited as footnote 106 is inaccurate, unsupported hearsay and at best a secondary citation -- not a primary citation (as again the actual patents / patent applications are the direct source, best citation, and allow the public to understand best the proposition and evaluate for themselves the patent landscape ... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 37.205.61.203 (talk) 16:30, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

Saving the USS Ranger (CV-61)[edit]
| Off-topic |

Good afternoon to how this my concern. I'm part of a group that is trying to save our ship from being scraped. The government sold our ship for 1 penny, yes 1 whole cent! The group SOS Save Ranger (Last Chance) has people that will donate millions of dollars to save our mighty ship. but the government is saying no to us. We want our Carrier the USS Ranger to become a museum in Long Beach, Cali. Our ship is the last of her kind the first angle deck carrier and the last of the super carriers her sister ships are being cut up now in Brownsville, Texas. Our ship means everything to us and that is why I am writing to you, to ask for your support to get the message out to the Chivers across our great country and world to tell the government to put the Ranger back on the Donation list. That is all we want is to get her back onto the donation list so we can make her a museum so people can see what a super carrier looks like inside and on the flight deck and deep down in her hull. https://www.change.org/p/the-united-states-navy-please-save-the-uss-ranger-from-being-demolished Please go to this web page and sign our petition so we can save her. - Though the message that you posted may well be a worthy cause, it doesn't belong here. This page is for editors of Wikipedia to ask questions about how to edit this encyclopedia. It isn't a noticeboard to promote worthy causes. I'm sure that you can find many websites & social media outlets where your message would be appropriate. Is my Draft submitted for review?[edit]
Hello, I am having a terribly difficult time figuring out if the draft I wrote has actually been submitted for Review to be published. I have pressed the Submit for Review button multiple times but al always brought back to the same page that asks me to Save again. Please help me figure out 1) if my draft is submitted and 2) if it is not, how can I submit it!
Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Indigo Education Company (talk • contribs) 23:07, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
- Hi @Indigo Education Company: Your draft is currently not submitted for review. When you click the green "Submit for Review" button, you need to then scroll down and save the page (via the "Save page") button as you would any other edit. That being said, I noticed your username appears to represent a company - usernames on Wikipedia need to represent you as an individual, not a company or any other organization. I'll leave you a message on your talk page with more details on how to fix this. Thanks! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 23:10, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
- Nor should it be submitted in its current state. While it has no references to reliable third-party sources, it will certainly be rejected. Maproom (talk) 23:59, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
- I see that (despite the advice above) a draft has been submitted for review, with "references" being one press release and two LinkedIn pages, but no reliable sources. Why do people ask questions here and then ignore the advice they are given? - David Biddulph (talk) 03:28, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

WP:MODERNPLACENAME[edit]
According to WP:MODERNPLACENAME, when dealing with a geographical location in a historical context, we should use the name from the relevant time period. - It's for football season articles where a club or a league has changed names. Was hoping there was something documented. Hack (talk) 13:17, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
- I know nothing of how we do this in association football articles, but with major US sports we use the contemporary name, not the name used today. See 1920 World Series, where the losing team is referred to both by their official name of "Brooklyn Dodgers" and their nickname of "Brooklyn Robins" (reflecting contemporary use of both terms), but never by today's name of Los Angeles Dodgers. Alternately, see Super Bowl III. It refers to the losers as "Baltimore Colts", only using "Indianapolis" to refer to what was then the future, and the winners are mentioned as being part of the "American Football League", with today's name, "American Football Conference", again being used as a term for future events. Nyttend (talk) 13:30, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
- I don't know a general guideline but for sports teams and leagues I would use the contemporary name with a piped link or redirect to the right article. You didn't specify a football code but I guess it's soccer. Then Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football is the place to ask. Oh, I see you have already discussed it at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football#Competition naming. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:58, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
- Create a redirect. For example: Girl Guides of America is an early name of the Girl Scouts of the USA and appropriate for use in that context. -- Gadget850 talk 14:44, 27 February 2015 (UTC)

Getting hex triplets from images[edit]
Is there any way to get the hex triplet of part of an image without doing it yourself? Two years ago, File:Napoleoniceurope.png was modified by changing the color for Norway and two other states, but its use at Franco-Ottoman alliance (find it with a CTRL+F search for "Napoleon came in direct contact") still reflects the old color. Since {{legend}} relies on the hex coding, I'd like to change it from #0070FF to whatever shade of brown it is now, but I don't know how to get the computer to find the current color's hex triplet, and I don't trust myself to guess accurately. Nyttend (talk) 13:19, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
- The first result [2] of my first Google search get image color seems to work fine. I dowloaded the image and got the colors shown here. There are also tools which work in browsers without having to download first. Try extension get image color. People at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Computing may know good tools. Facebook and List of hooligan firms[edit]
I've just reverted a couple of entries over at List of hooligan firms as they were unsourced, and one of the contributors has come back with a source which happens to be Facebook.
I was going to just revert again, as FB is not (usually) a reliable source, but a quick glance shows that many of the firms are supported by facebook pages. Given the nature of the topic - football hooliganism - FB is probably one of the better ways of identifying such firms, and if I revert the recent addition, I'm morally bound to do so to the rest of the entries as well.
Any other opinions? Chaheel Riens (talk) 17:01, 27 February 2015 (UTC)

- Not always true - as I pointed out above: "Self-published or questionable sources may be used as sources of information about themselves". Still, thanks for commenting. Chaheel Riens (talk) 18:30, 27 February 2015 (UTC)

-
- The problem here is that you have no idea whether a particular facebook page is self published. Many are published by enemies of the individual or group they claim to represent. Do hooligan firms even have an organization or established leader who can speak authoritatively in the name of the firm?

Problem in creating an article[edit]
I want to create an article on Easton, which is a township in Washington County, New York, USA. Apparently a redirect to Aston prevents me from doing so. I don't know what to do. deisenbe (talk) 19:25, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
- I'm not sufficiently familiar with how NY uses townships, but are they not equivalent to towns there? Is this what you're looking for: Easton, New York? Rwessel (talk) 19:35, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
-
- And what is the exact title of the redirect you mention? Easton is not a redirect, and no redirects to Aston have "Easton" in the name. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:46, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
- But in general, whenever somebody wants to create an article but is worried about existing similarly named articles or redirects, my advice is to create the article in Draft space and not worry about the name. When you eventually submit the draft for review and it is accepted, the accepting reviewer will worry about moving it to the right place and sorting out disambiguations and redirects. Deleting Administrator[edit]
Hello,
I created a page that was deleted because of the following:
18:33, 27 January 2015 Jni (talk | contribs) deleted page Draft:Gregory V. Jones (G12: Unambiguous copyright infringement of http://www.sou.edu/envirostudies/faculty/jones.html)
What I am unsure of is why? I created the referenced page (http://www.sou.edu/envirostudies/faculty/jones.html) and used my on photo on both. How does one create a wiki page without falling into this problem. Now if I create another attempt at this page I will run afoul of other issues. It says to "first contact the deleting administrator" however I do not see how to do this anywhere. Please help, I am a rookie at this.

- The deleting administrator is Jni. You can contact them on their userpage, User talk:Jni. suggestion about content display[edit]
Hi, Suggestion is about content interlinking . There are various interlinking of pages of wikipedia .Whenever I am reading any article , various blue color text which has separate links are given. It is tedious task for reader to go to that page and read the whole transcript which is just needed to understand the original one .Instead of that , if wikipedia could do like 'if I bring the cursor on the link , it should show the first paragraph of link content in yellow color box below the link.' It would be of enormous help to users. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 123.236.164.133 (talk) 07:37, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

Problem with Wikipedia articles' images & PDFs[edit]
I hope this is the right location for my query.
I’m not using Wikipedia’s book-creator (PDF) because the book’s title is not there, when I get the book (PDF). I’ve reported the problem, to Wikipedia, but I only got (I guess, I’m not sure what it is) something that quotes (??) my question and that perhaps is an answer, in....German....
I’m using MozillaFirefox add-on “Print Pages To PDF” but there’s a Wikipedia-only problem. This Firefox add-on works very well with all websites, except Wikipedia. It does not reproduce (to PDF) the images contained in Wikipedia’s articles. The text is fine, the images are not there. As I said, the problem is only with Wikipedia, the add-on works fine with all other websites.
The issue began a couple of weeks ago. Has Wikipedia changed something with its articles’ images, lately??
I’ve checked and re-checked my computer, I’ve disabled other Firefox add-ons, other apps, etc, but the problem remains. I'm not an expert, so I don't understand if the problem is with the add-on, or with Wikipedia, or both.
In advance, thanks for your help BeginnerW (talk) 16:18, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

Mario Bernasconi article[edit]
To whom it may concern, We experienced problems on our article that we tried to redress without success. From the initial submission we provided only material that is in our possession and displayed at the Museo Mario Bernasconi and at the Casa natale in Pazzallo Lugano Switzerland. Some of the pictures we submitted and displayed in the Museum were taken by professional photographers friends and colleagues of Mario Bernasconi that were compensated at the time (70 years ago) and are now deceased. The daughter of Mario Bernasconi, Claudia published three books on the life of her father and for the last book published by Salvioni editore Bellinzona in 2005 she commissioned TI-Press SA Carlo Reguzzi to provide pictures of all works of art. TI-Press was paid in full and released the copyright of the pictures to the Museum. The museo Mario Bernasconi is a non profit Museo with free entrance to the Public. In spite of your classification of low interest Mario Bernasconi was a major sculptor of the period (1900) so much so that his works are considered the symbol of the city Paradiso-Lugano (Acquaiola) and of the city of Lugano the "Risveglio" (awakening).
Having said all this we were puzzled when Wikipedia removed the pictures of the sculptor with one of his model (Mario e Giovane Madre) and the one of the Idiot (La Scema) and the head of "Eva" all were prized works by the Swiss Confederation.
At the same time a Picture of the sculptor by Photographer Brunel was also removed.
At the time we complained but with no results.
now a few years later two additional pictures were removed: one of Claudia neonata and one of Filippo Boldini. Both works as the previous ones are original in our possession, exhibited at the Museo with no restrictions on anyone that wants to take pictures or films. (Swiss TV program Cult 82 by RSI Quotidiano made various films) (also various youtube films were made) over the years; and again for the pictures thereof made by TI-Press we have the copyright, All the original bronzes, casts, and pictures are in our possession and exhibited at the Museo with no restrictions for visitors.
We feel that the pictures complement the article and wonder why they were removed; We thank you for your attention, regards, Claudia Esposito Bernasconi Museum Curator Museo Mario Bernasconi Piazzetta Mario Bernasconi 7 6912 Pazzallo CH museoclaudia@gmail.com
We repeat the original bronzes, casts, and pictures are in our possession and exhibited at the Nuseo — Preceding unsigned comment added by Claudia esposito bernasconi (talk • contribs) 23:31, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
- The images were removed from Wikimedia Commons for copyright reasons. For an image to be kept on Wikipedia Commons, there must be evidence that any relevant copyright has expired or been released under a suitably free license. My understanding of the deletion notices here and here is that the problem was not the copyright in the images, but in the sculptures themselves, which presumably belongs to the sculptor's heirs. Inaccurate information in article, can someone fix it?[edit]
Spartacus, the historical figure, of course has its own page, because Wikipedia is a hub for all knowledge for as far back as we have records and educated guesses.
So I can't even begin to imagine how many poorly written high-school essays have been plagued with the first line of that article. The first line indicates that it was not just completely factual and real Spartacus who began the slave rebellion, but his fictional super-friends, Crixus, Oenomaus, Castus and Gannicus.
Which does not make sense since Gannicus, a very official and Roman sounding name, does not actually exist. Why? Because the shows producers, knowing that Andy Whitfield was undergoing treatment for his cancer, needed a strong male character to take the mantle of champion until Crixus was a viable character. So they made a Latin sounding name, because anything with the prefix "-cus" sounds relatively Romany. Mark my words, though, it is a fake name.
As for the rest of them, Crixus, Oenomaus, and Castus (and Gannicus, but we already know why he's not real), there is no citation of their existence. The fact is, the writers needed good, strong, and memorable characters to throw in to support Spartacus and the rest of the cast to make the show really come alive for us viewers, but they would also have to be characters who never existed.
So, I will say this again, Crixus, Oenomaus, Castus, and Gannicus never ever existed. Could someone please edit the Wikipedia article to properly show this? And these characters have even been given their own freaking pages. They're not even REAL! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.69.2.18 (talk) 03:43, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
- As you say, they have their own pages, linked in Spartacus which lists "Crixus, Oenomaus, Castus and Gannicus". I examined the first article Crixus. The page history [3] shows it was created in 2005, while Spartacus (TV series) premiered in 2010. Crixus#References lists several ancient Roman sources which mention Crixus, for example "Appian, Civil Wars 1.116" from 73 B.C. which says: "There many fugitive slaves and even some freemen from the fields joined Spartacus, and he plundered the neighboring country, having for subordinate officers two gladiators named Œnomaus and Crixus". All four articles have references so no, I will not remove the people or claim they never existed. PrimeHunter (talk) 04:14, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
Lead images in biographical articles[edit]
I've noticed many biographical articles show a recent photo of the subject in the lead, often in preference to a more "iconic" image that would better represent why the person is known or notable. For example, in the article on Art Garfunkel, the lead photo is a 2013 photo of the subject, even though the lead states that he is best known for his performing career as part of the Simon & Garfunkel duo. Is there a specific guideline about this, or is this just something that has emerged in practice? 67.188.230.128 (talk) 05:33, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

- There is a Paul Wheeler mentioned in the article for Cartridge World which has a time line. Perhaps the OP is referring to that article (which needs a good deal of help). There have been a number of edits made to it of late. Dismas|(talk) 06:33, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
Citation date for a 10-years later paperback edition[edit]
Regarding this: I have the page numbers, but not for the edition that was published the year the book itself was first published. Normally I'm not a stickler for ref template formatting, but this needs to be perfect before it's added to the article for ... reasons ... Hijiri 88 (聖やや) 06:22, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
- In my opinion, you should cite all the information for the edition of the book that you are holding in your hands. It is not at all uncommon for later paperback editons to be expanded, modified, and have errors corrected. So cite the edition you actually read. You can note "first published 19XX" as long as it is crystal clear which edition you have read. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 06:49, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

Wikipedia plagiarism site[edit]
This site, which calls itself the Marine biology resource network and masquerades as a copyrighted "database of marine species", appears to contain extensive plagiarism of Wikipedia. Where should the matter be referred? --Epipelagic (talk) 09:01, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
- Nowhere, really. I can copy what you just said and use it however I want. Same with everything on Wikipedia. Part of the contract mentioned above the "Save page" button. The writer at this crab article remembered the attribution part.
- When someone doesn't, you can refer them to the same contract. If they choose to break the terms, there's probably not a lot to do, as far as legal remedies go. And what there is is probably too expensive.
- Half the Internet (or close) copies Wikipedia. It's sort of what we're here for. No real harm done, since this site doesn't carry advertising or use paywalls. No incentive for hoarding knowledge. InedibleHulk (talk) 09:33, March 1, 2015 (UTC)
Name of the school has changed - please help![edit]
Hi,
I wonder if someone could please give me an advice as the school I work for has become an academy as from today, 1st March 2015. The name of the school has changed slightly and although I have changed the text successfully, the title is still there on Wikipedia showing the old school name 'Saint Cecilia's, Wandsworth Church of England School'. Could you please let me know how I change the title to the new school name which is Saint Cecilia's Church of England School? Thank you in advance - any help would be greatly appreciated. Saint Cecilia's, Wandsworth Church of England School — Preceding unsigned comment added by SAIN2015 (talk • contribs) 09:30, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
- Hello, I moved the page per your request and the school's actual website. A redirect with the "old" name will be kept, so the article can be found searching with either name. (I have changed your "external" link to an easier "internal" Wiki-link to the same target). GermanJoe (talk) 09:45, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
