While the 35 times wipe was published-- and was debatable then-- it was for MFM/RLL drives which use formating to lay down their tracks and theoretically leave remnants of data files behind on overwrite.

35 times wipe on a modern HDD would take days!!!!

Modern drives in use for over a decade --IDE/PATA/ATA-5/ATA-6/SATA drives come with their low level formating pre-installed on the drive. They work on a different method in much tighter density.

A single pass of zeros is acknowledged sufficient to keep even the NSA from recovering data.

Don't believe me? Call and ask ANY data recovery service if they can recover data from a drive that has been completely wiped with a single pass of zeros. I only know of one service that claims to be able to recover data from this scenario and they are not considered reputable.

You can use SDelete -c (Microsoft) to wipe all free space on a drive with zeros, after deleting any cache, log, temp and history data with ccleaner or window washer.

[You should encrypt (TrueCrypt) all files on the HDD first using an obnoxious lengthy randomly generated ASCII password.]

Or you can use a block wiper like DBAN or more thorough (but not necessarily working on all hard drives) the Secure Erase feature built into all ATA/SATA HDD's firmware using HDDerase.

The best way to clean your hard drive is to put it in the strong magnetic field.I did it multiple times and know for sure that everything will be destroyed permanently
