How to Enlarge a Square Grid Sewing Pattern from a Book
Most patterns for sewing that are provided in craft books are not to size but require enlarging. It is easy to do once you know how.
Steps
-
1Look for the scale given by the instructions and create a grid that reflects this proper size that the pattern should be. A common scale is 1" x 1" / 2.5 centimeter (1.0 in) x 2.5 centimeter (1.0 in) per square but each pattern will vary, so be sure to check when making your grid.Ad
-
2Place a piece of tracing paper over the grid. It is best if you tape it into place or it can shift on you as you are tracing over it.
-
3Begin tracing at a point where the pattern line coincides with an intersection of four squares. Make a dot at this point.
-
4Work around the pattern piece carefully. Make a dot at each point where the pattern line intersects with a line on the grid.
-
5Once finished tracing around the pattern, join up the dots. Use the eraser to remove wobbly lines or mistakes.
-
6Draw on any symbols and markings to the pattern piece. This is important so that you know what needs to be done for each piece.
-
7Label and cut out each pattern piece.
-
8Tape together any adjoining pattern pieces that have crossed over pages.
-
9Keep pattern pieces in a labelled envelope so that you don't lose them.
-
10Proceed with your project!Ad
