Steps

    Go to your state's labor or school website. Do a search on Google to find the website for your state.

    Print out and fill out the 'application for employment'

    In order to fill out the form, you need your parent's signature, a note from your doctor saying that you are in good health to work, evidence of your age (generally a birth certificate or driving permit works well), and in some states you need your employer to write a letter saying how many hours a week you will be working and which days you will be working.

    Some cities and states require that you are passing all of your classes in order to receive a work permit.

    Since you are home schooled, you generally will have to do the same thing as steps 1-4, but you may have to submit your application to your state's department of labor office.


Tips

  • Make sure you meet all of the state's criteria prior to going to the state office.
  • Some states allow you to mail in your application. This can take much longer to process, but may be easier than traveling to the correct office.
