With the fact that more people are now accessing the Internet via a mobile device than a desktop PC, it's easy to understand why 75% of customers polled in a 2012 Google study said they "prefer a mobile friendly site". 70% of mobile searches act within an hour, only 30% of PC searchers do (Mobile Marketer 2012).  It is no surprise that the total number of mobile phones, smartphones and tablets in use by 2017 will be larger than the world’s population (according to predictions from analysts CSS Insight). Whether you are a small business operator, president of a sports team or community group, musician, artist or real-estate agent; having a mobile website is one of the best ways to interact with people you’re involved in. This helps you to create new and maintain existing relationships and update them with the latest information. This article will explain you how to do that with more perfection and with love. Just follow the steps given below:
In the past you needed to spend money hiring a mobile agency to create you a mobile app, or you had to have a deep level of technical and programming skills to do it yourself. Today though, any small business operator, one-man-show entrepreneur, charity organisation or even a sports association; can create your own interactive mobile website without learning how to program. There are many easy-to-use tools that enable you to build your mobile website in a short period of time. Here’s how you can start.

EditSteps

  1. 1
Have a clear picture of your app in mind. Decide on what type of app will you be making. What is it for? Which type of audience is it targeted for? Is is practical? These are just a couple of questions that you need to decide what mobile app you’ll be creating. Let this plan be a flexible one, just in case you need to change it later on while you’re making the app.
  2. 2
Name your app After seeing the visions for your fresh app now it's time that you name it. Name should be catchy and more appealing to people. You can use the name of the website as the name of your app or create a new name for the app. Avoid using the same lame name for your app. For example: If you're creating a photo editor app don't name it 'Super cool photo editor', name it with something unique or make your own new word.
  3. 3
Search the internet for mobile app development softwares. As mentioned earlier, there are tons of software on the internet that you can use to create your app. Among those choices, we recommend these three free-to-download programs that can help you create apps for your mobile website.
    • AppsGeyser– AppsGeyser is a user-friendly platform that enables users to convert their existing website content into a mobile friendly site. It is so simple to use, as it only requires 3 simple steps. The first step requires the you to enter a web address, HTML code, upload document and link Youtube videos, which can be done in less than 10 minutes. The second step displays your website content which you have submitted. The third step requires you go through several steps to publish your app to Google Play.
Although it is free to use the AppsGeyser tool, if you want to publish the result as an Android app, then you will need to pay $25 for the Google Android developer account. Only then, your app can be published in the Google Play market. Unfortunately, it is not clear that this is the case before you start making your mobile website / Android app. You only find this out in the very last step (Step 3) when you try to publish your app.
    • If you're looking to just enter the Android market, this is the tool for you. However, expect that your app will get lost in the crowded Google Play market. If your app is your core source of income, you will need to work extra hard to build your brand outside the Google Play market; whether it is SEM or content marketing.
    • Dudamobile– Dudamobile is another mobile site builder which enables you to create your own mobile website without any coding on cross platforms (Android, iPhone, Windows and Blackberry). The tools give you great control over the design and content of your mobile site.
    • Also like AppsGeyser, it has 3 simple steps to get your mobile website in less than 10 minutes. The first step requires you to put in your website URL on the main page of the Dudamobile website. The second step allows you to pick the design and edit the pages as you like. You can choose to make your mobile website to look exactly the same as your desktop version, or you could pick from the gallery of icons, colours and buttons. Step 3 is as easy as clicking publish. This is also where you can setup your mobile website redirect so when a user types in your www.yoursite.com on their mobile, he/she will automatically see the mobile version instead of the desktop version. It does require you setting up a mobile sub-domain name - m.yoursite.com- and fiddling around with your DNS settings.
    • The beauty of Dudamobile is also their mobile site preview, where you can preview your site in different platforms (iPhone, Android, Windows Phone and Blackberry). This means that you don't have to check on each physical mobile phone to see if your mobile content is properly laid out. The only thing you should be cautious with, is the content you edit and delete on your Dudamobile mobile site, as the sync is only one-way (Desktop site to your mobile site).
    • Dudamobile provides 3 different plans; a free one, $9 per month, and $86.40 per year (they give 20% discount if you pay upfront for a year). The free plan supports up to 10 pages, but only allows 500 monthly page views, features ads and comes with a dudamobile/yoursite domain name. It also limits you to some of the functionality such as Click-to-call, Mobile map, Yelp reviews, OpenTable, etc. The paid plans doesn't limit visits to your mobile site, is completely ad-free and you are can have a proper domain name, eg, m.yoursite.com.
    • Dudamobile is a great mobile website builder for any small businesses that need a quick, cheap and simple mobile website .
    • AppMakr’s The Machine – The Machine is a web-based tool and is most suitable for those who are not keen in using Java. It uses a simple drag-and-drop interface, and the elements dragged here are the actual icons used in your app, rather than symbolic blocks. The Machine creates cross-platform mobile apps that run natively on Android, iPhones and in the mobile web browser of any other HTML5 enabled smartphone. Apps built are automatically uploaded for free to the AppMakr’s app store and the web, and can be published to commercial markets including iTunes and Google Play for a fee. This app is what we’ll use for the rest of the article, since it’s the easiest to use among the three.
  4. 4
Go to http://www.appmakr.com, Once you’re on the site, you’ll need to sign in with via one of your existing accounts on the web. You can either use your Gmail, Google account, Facebook, Twitter account, or your Yahoo ID to log in. You never need to tell AppMakr your password, or register again with them, so you don’t have to worry about remembering another set of login details.
  5. 5
Fill in the details on the first page. Step one is where you’re asked to include basic information about your mobile app, which covers Contact Information, Name of the App, Overall Colors & Design (Colors of background, title and text), Background Image of the app interface, and Splash-screen image (this image will appear when the app is loading). You can upload your own design or image; or select from The Machine’s library of free images. Do note that the image uploaded should have recommended dimensions of 768 pixels wide X 1024 pixels high. Finally, you’ll provide information of App Demographics where you to select the region, country or state that your app is targeting. In this example, we’re going to look at a mobile website or an app developed for a local bar, which can also be applied for a shop, cafe, restaurant or any food and beverage outlet.
  6. 6
Click the “Next” button and proceed with app creation. Step Two is where you build the bulk of your interactive mobile website content. The left panel has a list of multi-function tools with categories of customized and pre-made apps you can choose from. The centre (preview) panel is where you layout your mobile website accordingly, which also gives you a good preview what it would look like. The right panel refers to the multi-function tool you have selected, and you are required to provide detailed information whether it is a URL link, image or text.
    • Click on a category, and drag the app you desire from the drop-down box selection; and drop it in your centre (preview) panel. You have the flexibility to design the layout of your apps as well as include your own icons. The grid will give you some help in this layout. Click on the app icon in the middle panel, and the right panel of information will appear. This is where you are required to provide detailed information for that specific app selected. Basically, you’ll be creating a mobile website that is a combination of customized and pre-made apps from the Multi-function Tools library on the left panel. You can compile community service apps with social media apps and chat services all in one interface.
    • Here are a few examples of functions you can include in your app:
      a. Menu, Reservations – You can include your menu details by navigating your RSS feeds for your menu on Allmenus.com. You can do the same with Reservations, by inserting the URL from your Open Table account.
    • b. Directions – So you want to include directions to your bar? #*On the left side of the screen, choose Location Services.
    • A drop-down menu will reveal three icons. Drag the “Directions” icon from the left panel and drop the icon anywhere into the centre panel.
    • Type in your address on the right panel. You can also use Google Maps to verify that the address is valid.
    • Your app will now be able to point your customers to your location. You can also create multiple directions for your different branches.
      c. Calendar – Want to update your customers with your Happy Hours during the week?
    • Check the calendar on your phone and find the Settings or Preferences page. Set the calendar settings to public.
    • Find the iCal link, which ends in “.ics”, and copy this link. In most phone calendars, it can be found near the bottom of the settings page.
    • Go back to the Machine and click the Events drop down menu.
Drag the Calendar icon to the phone interface area (the middle of the screen).
    • Paste the iCal link in the URL field on the lower right part of the page.
    • Save your work.
  7. 7
Publish your App. Once you’re done with the app’s customization details, you can finally publish and download your app. This last step is where you will choose an icon for your app, which is displayed in the markets and on your users’ phones. You will need to create a detailed description text about your app and attach keyword tags to your app. By making your description text and tags relevant to your app, it will help to make your app more “discoverable” / easier to find in the app marketplaces. You can either publish your app on the AppMakr’ Mobile Market, or in some of the external commercial markets (for a small fee). You have 4 different pricing options from free to $99/one time fee. The free bananas option lets you publish on Android and HTML5 platforms, and $1 Ad Free option lets you do the same, but without the ads! Or you could choose the $9/month option that lets you publish on all platforms in all markets.

Lastly, simply download the app from the URL or QR Code provided, and you’re done.

  • Always save your work every time you create changes on your app.
  • You can actually have your own personalized application where you can combine all your favourite links, contacts and photos in one place. These work great for families too, creating a private space for just your family members to share discussions, photos and click-to-call directories, without uploading to the millions of people on Facebook.
