The movie swings - physically, musically, psychologically, racially.
Richard Roeper
It would be an insult to call Chazelle a "promising" filmmaker, as this movie doesn't indicate mere potential - it is evidence of authentic, sometimes blazing talent.
Peter Rainer
Such a cooked-up piece of claptrap that I half expected Darth Vader to pick up the baton.
Tom Long
'Whiplash' is electric from beginning to end, a musical story of obsession, frustration and outright cruelty built on two knockout performances.
Rafer Guzman
Primarily two actors and a jazz score, but the result is a crackling good drama that feels almost like a thriller. Smart, stylish and intense.
Moira MacDonald
The film works, often wonderfully, as a remarkable visualization of jazz music - you feel it and breathe it, just like the musicians - and as a showcase for the two actors at its center.

Obsession Thing I loved about this movie. Was the representation of determination. How a person can push themselves beyond their limits, do whatever it takes, to be the best. The growth of Miles Teller in the film is fantastic. He goes from being proud of being in the elite jazz class, to having to be the best and nothing else will cut it. No excuses. No breaks. Just perfection in his mind. And sacrifice everything else. True determination. True obsession.
Intense, phenomenal, Oscar 'in waiting' One of the years very best. Absolutely intense, substance, magical & phenomenal film. Miles Teller is a special actor, making all things seem easy, creating a true character from mere words on paper. This guy is a wonderful actor! JK Simmons Oscar nominee performance! 5 stars!

Whiplash This movie hooks you in. You laugh, you cry, you sympathize with the characters. You feel heartbroken through the bad, and you feel great through the good. Whiplash is one of best movies of all time, and proves that you dont need a large spectacle to make a good movie. Whiplash should be praised for what it teaches, and how it makes audiences feel. Even if you dont like jazz, this movie is special, and shows just how far you need to push yourself to strive for greatness.

Negative Reinforcement can result in greatness When "A Few Good Men" came out I disagreed with the premise of the film which attacked the use of negative reinforcement to create a highly effective military unit. This movie seems to show a flip side where enduring the crucible of antagonistic adversity can be a baptism by fire that can weld a person in resolve and determined focus to achieve greatness. Then those for whom the crucible is removed in the name of political correctness are in fact cheated of facing that challenge and being able to emerge on the other side with a sense of accomplishment.

So Powerful The best movie I've seen in a long time. Amazing characters, story, acting, directing... Not embarrassed to say I wept when it was over. As a former professional musician for about 15 years, I was so moved by this film and identified with both lead characters. Loved it. Loved it. And, did I say I LOVED IT?

Awesome -should have had more exposure Before the Oscar show I heard remote comments about this movie, but really had no idea what it was about or how good it might be. Having seen Birdman and Theory of Everything, which both disappointed me, this film surpassed them both. I really enjoyed this film it's too bad it didn't get more publicity because so many movie goers may miss out.

Drumroll, please... I try not to let my opinion be swayed by reviews, but sometimes I read them by accident. One line grabbed my attention, though: "This movie is called Whiplash, which is exactly what Miles Teller will get if his career doesn't slow down." If Birdman is the Most Valuable Player of the film industry, then this is Most Improved. Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons show a tragic depth that their former raunchy teen comedies, cameos, and commercials just don't illustrate. Damien Chazelle knows music.
