VLA Patent Pro Bono Program
VLA is excited to present a new program that will facilitate the placement of low-income artists, arts-related organizations, and other independent inventors with the pro bono legal assistance of a patent attorney.
At VLA we believe that the arts has greatly influenced technology and innovation, and we hope to reflect that in the launch of this program by providing resources to independent inventors who have used their skills to redefine the arts and technology.
The program’s main goal is to provide application drafting services for those innovators who believe they have a novel invention but have not yet filed for a patent. Additionally, those who have filed for provisional applications or have filed a non-provisional application but have not yet received an office action may be admitted on a case-by-case basis.
If you are seeking representation for your invention and believe that you qualify for our services, please contact the Art Law Line at 212-319-2787 ext. 1.
If you have specific questions or inquiries, please send your inquiries to patents@vlany.org.
How the program works:
Inventors:
Start the process of acquiring a patent attorney through VLA today!
Step 1: Fill out the appropriate intake form online or call the Art Law Line at 212-319-2787 ext 1, and find out if you qualify for pro bono services.
Step 2: If you qualify, we will advise you of the administrative fees to be placed on our Caselist, and schedule you for a consultation with a staff attorney to discuss the process and give you some preliminary advice on how to protect your invention before filing your patent application.
Step 3: Caselist Placement – our placement rates are high (over 90%) but not entirely guaranteed.
Step 4: The volunteer patent attorney will contact you should they decide to take on your case!
Attorneys:
Please refer to the volunteer attorney orientation page for more information on how to take on pro bono cases through us.
If you have already attended our orientation and regularly receive the Caselist, then let us know that you are additionally interested in taking on cases through the patent pro bono program. The process is virtually the same, but the program will focus on patent drafting and prosecution matters only.
This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
