Food poisoning - listeria

Listeria is an illness caused by eating foods contaminated by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. Listeria infection can be dangerous for pregnant women, the elderly and people whose immune systems may be compromised. High-risk foods include:
  • deli meats
  • premixed raw vegetables including coleslaw
  • sushi or sashimi
  • soft cheeses such as brie and camembert.

Human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine for young people

The human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine protects against 70% of cervical cancers and 90% of genital warts.

The vaccine consists of three doses taken over six months, and is provided to girls and boys aged 12 to 13 as part of the school-based immunisation program. Catch-up immunisations are available in schools until December 2014 for boys between the ages of 14 and 15 years.

The vaccine is most effective at this age, before sexual activity starts and when young people are able to create more antibodies. For further information see the Human papilloma virus - immunisation factsheet.

65km for Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-threatening genetic disorder that severely affects the lungs and digestive system. It is the most common genetically inherited life-shortening chronic illness affecting young Australians today.

65 km for cystic fibrosis, to be held on 22 March 2014 around Royal Park Gardens and Princes Park, is an endurance walk around a 10.8 km track. You can walk as an individual or as part of a team for a total of 65 kms.

All proceeds from the event will go directly to research at Murdoch Children's Research Institute aimed at improving the lives of people with cystic fibrosis.
