NEW • Development Release: Linux Mint 2 RC "LMDE" |
Clement Lefebvre has announced the availability of a release candidate for the upcoming launch of Linux Mint Debian Edition, version 2. The release candidate is available in two flavours, Cinnamon and MATE, and is offered for 32-bit and 64-bit x86 machines. The release notes have further information on architecture support: "To guarantee compatibility with non-PAE processors, the 32-bit versions of Linux Mint Debian come with a 586 kernel by default. This kernel does not support SMP, and as a consequence is only able to detect one core and one CPU. If your CPU has multiple cores, or if you have more than one CPU, simply install the 686-PAE kernel and reboot your computer. Sometimes the MATE session fails to theme itself properly and shows up with ugly looking panels and icons. This is due to a race condition with MDM and it usually only happens in live mode. There are a number of workarounds for this." Linux Mint Debian Edition 2, code name "Betsy", will be based on Debian's upcoming stable release. NEW • BSD Release: pfSense 2.2.1 |
Chris Buechler has announced the release of pfSense 2.2.1, a security and bug-fix update of the project's FreeBSD-based specialist operating system for firewalls and routers: "pfSense software 2.2.1 release is now available, bringing a number of bug fixes and some security fixes. Security fixes: pfSense-SA-15_02.igmp - integer overflow in IGMP protocol; pfSense-SA-15_03.webgui - multiple XSS vulnerabilities in the pfSense WebGUI; pfSense-SA-15_04.webgui - arbitrary file deletion vulnerability in the pfSense WebGUI; FreeBSD-EN-15:01.vt - vt(4) crash with improper ioctl parameters; FreeBSD-EN-15:02.openssl - update to include reliability fixes from OpenSSL. A note on the OpenSSL 'FREAK' vulnerability: does not affect the web server configuration on the firewall as it does not have export ciphers enabled. pfSense 2.2 already included OpenSSL 1.0.1k which addressed the client-side vulnerability. If packages include a web server or similar component, such as a proxy, an improper user configuration may be affected. Consult the package documentation or forum for details." See the complete release announcement for further information. Download: pfSense-LiveCD-2.2.1-RELEASE-amd64.iso.gz (83.1MB, SHA256), pfSense-LiveCD-2.2.1-RELEASE-i386.iso.gz (78.4MB, SHA256). |

NEW • Development Release: antiX 15 Beta 1 |
The antiX development team has announced that the first beta build of antiX 15, a lightweight Debian-based distribution, is ready for testing. This release uses SysVInit only (rather than systemd) for managing services (some of the previously released alpha builds offered a choice between the two init systems). From the release announcement: "antiX 15 beta1-V available for testing. This is a 32-bit antiX full using SysVInit (hence the V) and some repackaged debs for 'nosystemd', e.g CUPS, dBUS. The ISO image is 701 MB so testers will have to overburn the CD. Custom 3.19.1 Linux kernel; addition of alsa-sound-card to set up multiple sound cards; Debian 'Jessie' set as default; UEFI support on the live medium (no support yet in the installer); reorganised menu layout; reorganised boot menu; splash enabled at boot - to remove press F7 and choose the 'No VGA' option; improved localisation - but it still needs work; many minor bugs squashed. Please test and post issues, comment in the forums." Visit the project's home page to read the brief release announcement. Download: antiX-15-beta1-V_386-full.iso (701MB, MD5, pkglist). |

NEW • Development Release: Evolve OS Beta 1.1 |
Ikey Doherty has announced the availability of a new development build of Evolve OS, a desktop Linux distribution featuring a desktop called "Budgie" and a custom package manager named "eopkg": "The Evolve OS team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Evolve OS Beta 1.1. This release focuses on stability and on bringing the core system up to scratch. Please note that as this is an update to beta 1, changes that are intended for beta 2 (such as UEFI support) are be present. Also note Evolve OS is only available as a 64-bit system. Core changes: Linux kernel 3.19.1, GCC 4.9.2, Clang/LLVM 3.5.0, systemd 218. Many Evolve OS packages are now being built with Clang by default and, as such, we have begun to reduce the overall footprint of the system. A live boot Evolve OS beta 1.1 (via USB) will use around 185 - 190 MB of RAM idle on a Thinkpad X1 Carbon, and boots in 2.3 seconds on an Intel NUC (D54250WYK) installation. With our last ISO image some users were unable to boot due to a conflict regarding USB 3. This has since been resolved." Here is the full release announcement. This is a maintenance release to fix some installation issues and provide all the updated packages that landed in the stable repositories since the previous release. The main new feature is that our ISO now supports booting and installing on UEFI systems! This ISO ships with the following notable packages and updates: KDE Applications 14.12.2, except for the applications that have been ported to frameworks 5, which will remain on their 4.14.3 versions; kde-workspace 4.11.16 and kdelibs 4.14.5; Frameworks 5.7; Calligra 2.9.0...."
