Guiding Principles for Building a Performance Engineering-Driven Delivery Model
While recently attending a Dynatrace User Group in Hartford, I had the opportunity to sit in on a great presentation from a leading US insurance company as they explained their three-year APM journey. I see a lot of these success stories, but this one was especially impressive. To see how they have refined their internal processes, successes and performance best practices to ensure delivery of high quality, high performing and highly scalable applications over these years.
The performance engineering group within the large US insurance company was the one that started adopting application performance management (APM) in the company. Overtime they built an APM maturity model that helped them achieve successful adoption of APM across all application owners. Below is the diagrammatic view of their model:

As the diagram shows, this is an iterative model that they built from their successes and failures. For example, once they showed their service value to application owners, they started building delivery processes for their services. As their delivery processes became streamlined, they started driving awareness of their services to larger groups within the company. As the demand for their services increased, they focused on hiring strong technical personnel within their team who could not only deliver the services efficiently but also brought technical thought leadership to application owners.
The top five takeaways from their presentation were:
- Demonstrate Value: As a performance engineering group, it is very important to demonstrate value of the processes and the tools that they use to a bigger audience including architects, developers and IT operations. For instance, this group used Dynatrace tools to find scalability issues of an application during the load testing cycle. Equipped with this information, they engaged the architects and the developers of the application and brainstormed with them about the architectural choices that were made in the application. This joint working engagement not only allowed them to show value of the performance engineering team but also enabled them to engage with the architecture team early on in the development cycle to eliminate any scalability issues and hence significantly reducing the cost.
- Highlight "Wins": The charter of the performance engineering team is to work across all application teams to inculcate performance management as part of the development process. This company is very much aware that the cost of fixing an issue increases multi-fold if it is not addressed early on in the development cycle. When they started the APM initiative, it was not necessarily easy. In order to show value of their services, they used past "wins" of fixing performance issues like scalability and slow response time in one application to showcase the importance of their services to other application owners, developers and architects. The end result is that they are at a stage where the demand for their services is outpacing the supply that in turn is a great place to be.
- APM is a journey: When asked about the time taken for them to reach their performance management goals, I was told that APM is a journey and does not necessarily have a finite end. They are continuously working to not only onboard more applications but also continuously improving their methodology to make it better. As shown in their model above, as the group grew and gained maturity in APM, they used their experience to take the operating model to the next level.

From watches to socks, shirts to wristbands, glasses to rings, wearables promise all kinds of features to make our lives better. Thus, everyone seems to be building new wearables or software to run on them. The hottest sectors for wearables currently are twofold: wristbands such as FitBit, Jawbone, Basis, Microsoft Band, Android Wear devices, and the Apple Watch (collectively dubbed “Smartwatches” for the rest of this post) and smart eyewear such as Google Glass, Meta, Vuzix, and more (henceforth “smart glasses“).
In recent years, we’ve watched mobile, cloud technologies and Internet of Things (IoT) enable increased connectivity for every network and every industry, ranging from connected cars to commercial vehicles and fleet management to smart cities to data centers. At MWC, it was clear that professionals in these areas are continuing to make strides in their fields. Below are a few of the major developments we noticed and look forward to hearing more as 2015 progresses.
Articles about the IoT (Internet of Things) have moved from technical journals to our daily newspapers. They are a popular mainstream media topic today, but where are there actual business values found as a result of the IoT? In this article we will explore some of these topics.

Imagine you are getting ready to fill your washing machine with all your of dirty clothes and when you are ready to close the door and fill up the detergent, you suddenly realize your detergent bottle is completely empty. A sense of panic washes over you and then the doorbell rings. You go to the door and the FedEx man is standing there with a package. Bewildered as to what you had just received, you immediately tear open the package and find your favorite laundry detergent, just in the nick of time! This is the future of Amazon.
Recently I’ve received a number of ‘I am writing to inform you that we were the target of a sophisticated cyber attack and some of your personal information may have been accessed by the attackers..’ letters for myself and my family. I especially hate the ones that start, ‘To the parents of…’ because my daughter has a rare genetic condition. You probably got one of these letters too since the Anthem breach could have disclosed medical records for as many as 80 million people.
The adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) appears to be unquestioned. Advances in wearables and sensors are strategic to tech companies, telecoms and manufacturers across multiple domains. Everyone from millennials to boomers is incorporating IoT technologies into the daily flow of life. Gartner says the IoT market will be $300 million in 2020. With all this projected growth, standards will play an increasing role in IoT adoption.
There's a lot of focus on the performance of mobile communications given the incredible rate at which mobile is outpacing legacy PC (did you ever think we'd see the day when we called it that?) usage. There's been tons of research on the topic ranging from the business impact (you really can lose millions of dollars per second of delay) to the technical mechanics of how mobile communications is impacted by traditional factors like bandwidth and RTT. Spoiler: RTT is more of a factor than is bandwidth in improving mobile app performance.
Security is one the more prominent of the application service categories, likely due to its high profile impact. After all, if security fails, we all hear about it. The entire Internet. Forever.
So when one conducts a survey on the state of application delivery (which is implemented using application services) you kinda have to include security.
Which of course, we did.
An explosive combination of technology trends will be where ‘microservices’ and the IoT Internet of Things intersect, a concept we can describe by comparing it with a previous theme, the ‘X Internet.'
The idea of using small self-contained application components has been popular since XML Web services began and a distributed computing future of smart fridges and kettles was imagined long back in the early Internet years.
WebRTC?
