Apple Pay

Your wallet. Without the wallet.

Now you can buy coffee, groceries, and more right from your wrist. Apple Pay will change how you make purchases with breakthrough contactless payment technology and unique security features built into Apple Watch. So you can use it to pay in a simple, secure, and private way.

An easier
way to pay.

Now paying in stores happens quickly and easily — there’s no need to open an app. You don’t even need to have your iPhone with you. Just double-click the side button and hold the face of your Apple Watch up to the contactless reader. A gentle pulse and a tone confirm that your payment information has been sent.

Setup is simple.

To set up your debit and credit cards on Apple Watch, simply open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone and select the “Passbook & Apple Pay” option. Tap “Add a new Credit or Debit Card.” Then use the iSight camera on your iPhone to capture your card information. You can also type it in manually. The first card you enter is your default payment card, but you can always switch it in the Apple Watch app. Want to switch cards when you’re paying? After double-clicking the side button, just swipe to browse through your cards and hold the face of Apple Watch near the reader to pay.

More secure payments.

Every time you hand over your plastic credit or debit card to pay, your card number and identity are visible. That’s not the case with Apple Pay. Instead of using your actual credit and debit card numbers, when you add your card to Apple Watch a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted, and securely stored in the Secure Element, a dedicated chip in Apple Watch. These numbers are never stored on Apple servers. And when you make a purchase, the Device Account Number, along with a transaction-specific dynamic security code, is used to process your payment. So your actual credit or debit card numbers are never shared by Apple with merchants or transmitted with payment.

Even if you lose Apple Watch, your accounts are protected. Because when you set up Apple Pay, you’re required to create a passcode. Each time you take Apple Watch off your wrist, the passcode must be entered to access it. And you can quickly remove your cards on iCloud.com.

Keep your purchases private.

Apple doesn’t store the details of your transactions, so they can’t be tied back to you. Since you don’t have to show your credit or debit card, you never reveal your name, card number, or security code to the cashier when you pay in a store. This additional layer of privacy helps ensure that your information stays where it belongs. With you.
