How to Communicate With Confidence
How to have a conversation with confidence is actually much easier than you think. Conversation is one of the oldest forms of communication and we do it all the time. We talk to our friends, family, coworkers, teachers and classmates. Remember once the conversation begins all the participants have opinions, feelings and fears.
EditSteps
-
1Have a positive attitude. Smile and show interest in your conversation. The more engaged you are, the more consideration you will get from those who are listening to you.Ad
-
2Practice fluid speech. When we talk, we often use little interjections and hesitant phrases such as "um" or "I mean" and of course there is the ubiquitous "like." These little conversation fillers have the unintended effect of making us seem less confident and sure of ourselves, and thus less persuasive.
- If you are confident in your speech, others will be more easily persuaded by what you have to say.
-
3Practice engaging speech. It won't matter how confident you are if no one is listening to you; monotonous speech will cause your audience to quickly disengage.
- Record yourself practicing a speech; you will be amazed at how monotonous you sound, even when attempting to be 'bright'. Correct delivery to an audience is initially going to feel very 'hammy.'
-
4Make eye contact. Making eye contact with those you are speaking to shows respect and helps maintain attention. If you are speaking to a crowd, try looking to their foreheads if direct eye contact makes you uncomfortable.
-
5Maintain good posture. Back straight, head up but relaxed is a good way to show confidence.
-
6Avoid nervous movements or "adjustments." These telegraph your nervousness. Constantly adjusting your clothes, for instance, is distracting to a listener or someone speaking directly to you. Relax and listen to what the other person is saying.Ad
