Enthusiasm for the Internet of Things has reached an all-time high. In 2013 alone, venture capitalists spent more than $1 billion dollars investing in the IoT space. With "smart" appliances and devices, IoT covers wearable smart devices, cloud services to hardware companies. Nest, a Google company, detects temperatures inside homes and automatically adjusts it by tracking its user's habit. These technologies are quickly developing and with it come challenges such as bridging infrastructure gaps, abiding by privacy concerns and making the concept a reality. These challenges can't be addressed without the kinds of agile software development and infrastructure approaches pioneered by the DevOps movement.

In her session at @ThingsExpo, Rachel Chalmers, Principal at Ignition Partner, discussed an investor's perspective on the IoT, provided an overview of the potential barriers such as security and interoperability for widespread adoption, and how DevOps can help overcome these barriers.
Key messages:
- General overview of IoT
- What the IoT means for personal security and privacy
- Widespread adoption of the IoT and what this means for the future
- How to use DevOps to fill in the gaps
Speaker Bio:
Rachel Chalmers joined Ignition as a principal in 2013. She sources deals in enterprise and cloud infrastructure, "Big Data" and the "Internet of Things"; advises portfolio companies and provides counsel on industry trends.
Prior to Ignition, Rachel worked for 13 years at the 451 Group, an independent technology industry analyst firm focused on the business of enterprise IT innovation. She was most recently the company's vice president of research, overseeing all work on enterprise infrastructure software. Coverage areas included hypervisors, operating systems, provisioning and automation, application development, performance monitoring and lifecycle management. While at 451, Rachel was among the first analysts to cover Opsware, BladeLogic, VMware, Splunk and Cloudera.
Before becoming a technology analyst, Rachel was a journalist in the U.S. and Australia. She helped launch Computer Week, later PC Week Australia, and was the Internet editor for Computerwire, where she wrote about software and open-source technologies.
Rachel received a BA in English from the University of Sydney and a master's in philosophy, with a focus on Anglo-Irish literature, from Trinity College, Dublin. She is an advisor to the Ada Initiative, a non-profit that supports women in open technology and culture.

CEO Power Panel in Silicon Valley Examined Agility, Cloud, Big Data, and the 'Internet of Things'
Things are being built upon cloud foundations to transform organizations. This CEO Power Panel at 15th Cloud Expo, moderated by Roger Strukhoff, Cloud Expo and @ThingsExpo conference chair, addressed the big issues involving these technologies and, more important, the results they will achieve. Rodney Rogers, chairman and CEO of Virtustream; Brendan O'Brien, co-founder of Aria Systems, Bart Copeland, president and CEO of ActiveState Software; Jim Cowie, chief scientist at Dyn; Dave Wagstaff, VP and chief architect at BSQUARE Corporation; Seth Proctor, CTO of NuoDB, Inc.; and Andris Gailitis, CIO of DEAC, discussed how important public, private, and hybrid cloud are to the enterprise. How does one define Big Data? And how is the IoT tying all this together?

Scott Jenson leads a project called The Physical Web within the Chrome team at Google. Project members are working to take the scalability and openness of the web and use it to talk to the exponentially exploding range of smart devices. Nearly every company today working on the IoT comes up with the same basic solution: use my server and you'll be fine. But if we really believe there will be trillions of these devices, that just can't scale. We need a system that is open a scalable and by using the URL as a basic building block, we open this up and get the same resilience that the web enjoys.

The Internet of Things will greatly expand the opportunities for data collection and new business models driven off of that data. In her session at @ThingsExpo, Esmeralda Swartz, CMO of MetraTech, discussed how for this to be effective you not only need to have infrastructure and operational models capable of utilizing this new phenomenon, but increasingly service providers will need to convince a skeptical public to participate.
Get ready to show them the money!
These challenges can't be addressed w...
Implementing a recurring revenue business model guarantees stable, predictable income and a high customer lifetime value (CLV). It’s no surprise, then, that nearly half of U.S. businesses have either adopted or are planning to adopt recurring revenue models.
Recurring revenue is a disruptive trend that empowers companies to grow revenue, gain the competitive advantage, and increase market share across all industries, from healthcare to entertainment to retail. Some estimates place the total market value of the opportunity for recurring revenue business at $500 billion or more.
Given the current global furor over continuing data breaches, Edward Snowden disclosures, the hue and cry around NSA data collection from mobile phones and mobile encryption, now is a good time to stop and think before we plunge wholesale into even more extensive collection of personal information from IoT environments and devices.
Think how much worse a breach of data could be if it includes full profiles of people’s movements, actions, eating habits, purchase preferences or even more personal information. Consider at the same time the potentials for abuse if this information is improperl...
Cloud computing is transforming the way businesses think about and leverage technology. As a result, the general understanding of cloud computing has come a long way in a short time. However, there are still many misconceptions about what cloud computing is and what it can do for businesses that adopt this game-changing computing model. In this exclusive Q&A; with Cloud Expo Conference Chair Jeremy Geelan, Rex Wang, Vice President of Product Marketing at Oracle, discusses and dispels some of the common myths about cloud computing that still exist today.

Axeda, based in Foxboro, Mass., has created a machine-to-machine capability for analysis -- in other words, an Axeda Machine Cloud for the Internet of Things.
We have the whole Internet of Things (IoT) phenomenon. People are accepting more and more devices, end points, sensors, even things within the human body, delivering data out to applications and data pools. What do you do in terms of helping organizations start to come to grip with this M2M and IoT data demand?
As I’m sure most readers of this blog already know, tech media company Gigaom shut its doors earlier this week. Stalwarts of Gigaom’s public-facing news site such as Stacey Higginbotham, Derrick Harris, and founder Om Malik have already offered personal perspectives on their own sites, and I expect others to follow in due course as they digest what happened and chart their own next steps. A strong team of knowledgeable, conscientious and respected journalists and support staff lost their jobs this week. I wish all of them luck in finding something new. But there was another side to Gigaom’s bu...
At some point in the near future, our alarm clock will ring when the biometric scanner monitoring our sleep indicates we have achieved optimum rest. Our clock will connect with the coffee maker, and a steaming cup of brew will be waiting, while the lighting system in our home gradually brightens to imitate a sunrise, waking us up slowly. We will leave the house listening to personalized news headlines and our connected (perhaps driverless?) car will route us the most efficient path to the office, where more connected devices (computer, printers, lighting and HVAC systems, security systems and ...
Remember the old joke about the farmer who won the lottery? A reporter asked him what he’d do now, and he responded he’d just keep on farming till the money was gone.
It seems that running a technology news organization is prone to the same fate, as GigaOm discovered this week. Just last year it received an infusion of $8 million from investors, but this week it ran out of money and abruptly shuttered its offices.
GigaOm offered more than tech editorial, however. It was also an industry research firm as well as an events company. By all accounts, both these lines of business were quite s...
