To list a file on this page:

Edit the file page.

Add {{puf|date=27 May 2015}} to the file page.
II
Create its PUF subsection.

Follow this edit link and list the file using {{subst:puf2|image=File_name.ext|reason=reason}} ~~~~ (remember to exclude the File: prefix).
III
Give due notice.

Inform the uploader by adding a message to their talk page using {{subst:fdw-puf|File_name.ext}} ~~~~

If the image is in use, also consider adding {{pufc|File_name.ext|date=27 May 2015}} to the caption(s), or adding a notice to the article talk pages. Consider also notifying relevant WikiProjects of the discussion.

Remember to replace "File_name.ext" with the name of the file

Unlike Wikipedia:Files for deletion the primary purpose of this page is to ascertain the source and/or copyright status of a file. Therefore it is not specifically a vote to keep or delete but a forum for the exploration of the copyright status/source of a file and contributions should not be added solely in those terms.

Listings should be processed by an administrator after being listed for 7 days. Files that are accepted following this 7-day period should have {{oldpuffull}} added to the file talk page. If no objection to the file's deletion is raised, or no proof that the file is indeed free is provided, the file may be deleted without further notice after the 7-day period.

Note: Files can be unlisted immediately if they are indisputably in the public domain or verifiably licensed under an indisputably free license (GFDL, CC-BY-SA, etc.—see Wikipedia:File copyright tags for more on these).

Speedy deletion[edit]

Blatant copyright violations or files missing source or license information may be "speedied"

If a file is unquestionably copied from another website and no assertion of permission or fair use is made, the file may be speedy deleted under criterion F9 (formerly I9). Such files do not need to be listed here. Please tag the file with {{subst:db-f9|url=source URL}} and warn the user with {{db-copyvio-notice}}.

If a file is missing source, evidence of permission, or license information, place either use:

on the description page to put the file in the appropriate category. After being tagged for 7 days, the file will be eligible for speedy deletion per criterion 4 or criterion 11 for images/media.

Please also notify the uploader so they get a chance to fix the problem(s). The templates {{subst:File source|File:file name}} and {{image copyright}} are made for this purpose, but feel free to write a message of your own. It is not necessary to warn the uploader about every individual file if they have uploaded several of such files, but at least one message telling them that files without source/license will be deleted should be given to each user.

If a file is indisputably non-free, and its possible use can comply with our non-free content policy, be bold and retag it as a non-free file using a non-free image tag instead of taking it to this page.

Please note that this page is not for disputing the fair use of already non-free media, but for the disputing if a freely licensed file really is free.   • Apparently professional photograph that has EXIF data listing the author as "Steve Christo". This image has now been uploaded 3 times by the uploader. The first time (at File:Jonothan Aspro.jpg), it was tagged {{PD-author|Paul Aspros}} and listed the source as "Sent to me personally". Now, on this duplicate image page, the uploader is claiming self-work. This is a likely copyrighted image that will need evidence of permission from the actual photographer.   • Image was uploaded using a CC BY-SA 3.0 license. Photo is of bottles of a particular brand of sriracha sauce whose product packing is likely still under copyright. Rooster logo of company is distinct enough so that it would not be considered too simple to be excluded from copyright protection. It's highly likely that this photo would fail c:Commons:PACKAGING and, therefore, be ineligible for upload to Commons because it would be considered to be non-free. This is quite likely fair use in the Sriracha sauce (Huy Fong Foods) article. The image just needs the appropriate verbiage and templates added. While it is not appropriate for Commons, it is fine as an upload here. JesseW, the juggling janitor 04:34, 23 May 2015 (UTC)
It's not clear to me exactly what verbiage would be appropriate for this sort of case, where a photograph of copyrighted packaging is being used. It is a derivative work of the packaging, and the uploader (presumably) created it by relying on fair use; it then has it's own copyright, which is released under a free license. Do we have some existing templates/boilerplate for this case? JesseW, the juggling janitor 04:46, 23 May 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for the feedback JesseW. There was a similar, albiet a non-free use, file discussed at Wikipedia:Non-free content review/Archive 63#File:Sriracha_"Rooster"_sauce.jpg. This was also a photo taken of a bootle of the same company's sriracha sauce. The close of that discussion stated "Consensus is the image fails WP:NFCC and should be deleted." So, based upon this WP:NFCR, this image's use as a non-free is not so clear and should probably be discussed at WP:NFCR if it is determined here that the image is not free. - Marchjuly (talk) 14:47, 23 May 2015 (UTC)
That does seem pretty conclusive, and sensible. I have no objection to deleting this image on the basis that it depicts a non-freely-licensed logo, and exceeds our desired range of non-free-content (given that we have an image of the company logo by itself).   • This is my first deletion nomination and I think I have followed the process wrong and I think may have started two deletion discussions.

This image is a screencapture of a recent youtube video. Specifically, I think it is a crop from the video at this exact time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W40qGkp-mEU&t=15m9s. There is no attribution in the image.

There is some evidence that this is a screencapture:

  • The image was uploaded on the same day as the youtube video was uploaded.
  • The lighting is the same, the electronic board looks the same, and in the side of the image it is possible to see the light blue table that is clearly visible in the video.

Having scanned through this user's previous uploads https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3AListFiles&user=Binarysequence&ilshowall=1, it looks like there are many other images which have also been blatantly stolen from this same youtube content creator.

I guess these images ought to be speedy deleted because of the blatant copyright violations, but I think it would be a shame if we were to lose all of this content. The original creator makes these youtube videos educationally, so they might be willing to allow us to continue using these images. Is there some process that could be followed to obtain permission apply the correct attribution without deleting these files? tommylommykins (talk) 17:52, 23 May 2015 (UTC)

Missing information about the copyright status in the United States, as required by Wikipedia. The copyright tag refers to the copyright status in Europe, which may be different to the copyright status in the United States. Thank you for your comments. I can only add that my father was born in Scotland and lived some 78 years of his life in his native Britain. In Bermuda, a British colony, he was employed in the 1920s for about 5 years by the British government as a plant pathologist. He was travelling (probably on a British ship) to New York paid by the British government to speak (at age 25) about his saving the then-vital Bermuda agricultural economy at a US academic conference. One can presume that he was photographed using his own camera by a European colleague with whom he was travelling (my father was a keen photographer).
