Steps
-
1Lay a rock foundation. Lay 2 or 3 layers of large rocks down as a base.
-
2Fill in the gaps with pebbles. In between rocks, there will be gaps. Fill these gaps in with small rocks and pebbles.
-
3Add a layer of sand and dirt. The sand and dirt will fall deep into the dam sealing off any small cracks in the dam.
-
4Cover the entire top of the dam with soil. Cover the top of the of the dam with about 1 1⁄2 feet (0.5 m) of soil.
-
5Sprinkle and bury grass seed throughout the topsoil. The grass's roots will tie the dam together.
-
6Fertilize the grass seed. This will make the grass root grow longer.
-
7Stock your pond. Put frogs and fish in the pond. If turtles are a problem in your pond visit http://www.wikihow.com/Catch-Painted-Turtles-in-a-Pond to find out how to catch them.
Tips
- You can also mix leaves in with the dam.
- Before you make the main dam, it is wise to make a smaller temporary dam. A temporary dam holds back enough water to allow you to build the main dam easier.
Warnings
- Most states require a permit to build dams. Check with your local division of fish and wildlife to see if you need a permit or not.
- Be ready to get some fines for flash floods.
