Are you scared your teen might start smoking, or fear the fact they've already started without you knowing? This will help you teach your teenager to overcome their potentially deadly habits before they're too far into it to quit.

Steps

  1. 1
Set a good example (don't smoke in front of them if you do smoke or try your best to give up). Our children are taught to lead by example; smoking in front of them is detrimental to their life education.
  2. 2
Understand why your teen may be feeling the need to smoke is it stress related, an act of rebellion or maybe trying to look cool. Nurture positive relationships, avoiding peer pressure and ways to cope with overbearing teens pushing bad habits onto our youth.
  3. 3
Try to help them by giving them knowledge on health effects and the cost. Show them materials, lead them to websites and even offer to attend meetings to help them better understand long-term health effects of smoking.
  4. 4
Punish them if you see them smoking, even if it hurts you to do so. Sometimes the best lessons learned are taking away freedoms to imbue your seriousness into their thought patterns.

Tips

  • Teens who's parents smoke are more likely to pick up the habit.
  • If you know the corner shop keeper then alert them of your teens smoking habits.
  • Try to get your child to reason with you (e.g. cut down or try to stop).
  • Don't give them money for cigarettes in the first place; if they need something other than their basic needs, offer to purchase those items in advance.

Warnings

  • Teenagers may be apprehensive at first; hold your ground.
  • Hiding cigarettes isn't too difficult; try and learn their hiding spots.
  • Read up on literature to help you determine places teens around your town frequent to catch them in the act.
