How to Resize Partition to Solve Low Disk Space on C Drive

Now, there are two ways to resize partition. One way is that you can extend volume with built-in Disk Management. However, this method is not available for Windows 2003 Server. How to do it? To be specific, Through extending them into adjacent unallocated space on the same disk, you can append many space to existing primary partitions. Because when we need extra space on a disk ,your computer benefits from extending volume disk. In other words, by extending volume disk, your computer will take more extra space. Besides, there is no need additional software by using extend volume disk management. Here are the following steps:(we choose to extend E drive as an example with built-in disk management for windows 2008.)

Method 1: built-in disk management

1 Click "start", choose “computer management”

2 from “disk management”, select the E drive to delete, click “delete volume”:(back up your data you want to keep before you delete E drive)

3 E drive is deleted:

4 Right click the C disk drive and click “extend”

5 Click "next"

6 Click "finish"

7 you will see the E disk volume is extended

Method 2: partition software

The other way is that you can using partition software. However, many free partition manager software on the market have a limitation that they can only work on the operating systems of desktop Windows7/8/XP/Vista. 1 Starting Partition Assistant Lite Edition. A intuitive interface appears in front of you. I t is clear at a glance. Now right click D partition and choose "Resize Partition". 2 Drag the right slider bar as the following picture In the pop-up window, click "OK" to realize this change. In this way, D partition has been shrunk. TIP: After shrinking, the unallocated space behind D partition must be larger than it. Otherwise, the next step can't be realized. 3 Right click D partition, select "Move Partition", and pop-up window will turn up again. Then drag the arrow to the right side. Click "OK", the unallocated space will move to the location behind C drive. 4 Next resize C drive and the steps are same with resizing D partition.(Note: see step2). 5 This time, C partition has been expanded. Tips

  • Lite edition only supports converting data storage disks and it limits you to moving a partition.
  • After shrinking, the unallocated space behind D partition must be larger than it.
