A school lockdown is when the school "locks down" because there is a dangerous and potentially armed intruder on school grounds. School lockdowns can be very scary - even if they are just drills; but there are a few simple steps you can take to help you and your classmates remain safe.

  1. 1
Participate in all drills as if they were a real lockdown. Treat them seriously, even if your friends don't. The things you learn during them may save your life one day.

  2. 2
Follow all your teacher's instructions. They have been trained and informed on the best way to keep you safe and stay calm.
  3. 3
When you hear the announcement that your school is in lockdown, follow the instructions given by your teacher.
    • If you're in a hallway, get to a bathroom as quickly as possible. Turn off the lights, get into a stall, stand on the toilet, and lock the stall door.
  4. 4
Do not talk, squirm, or laugh while the lockdown is going on. This may endanger your life as well as the lives of others.
  5. 5
Never think that you can be a hero. Nobody expects one student to save the day. Remaining quiet and calm will do more than confronting the intruder.

EditTips

  • Ignore classmates that try to get you to talk.
  • Remain calm. Panicking will only add to your teacher's worries.

EditWarnings

  • Do not stand up or move from your hiding place unless you are given the "all-clear" by a teacher or principal.
  • Be aware that teachers may be instructed to not let anyone, even students, into locked classrooms during a lockdown. If you're caught in a hallway, get to the nearest bathroom.
  • Take all drills seriously. They prepare you for the real thing.
