How to Clean a Cat Scratching Post
Dirty cat scratching post? Time to clean and sanitize it before your cat gets sick! This is for a scratching post consisting of sisal (rope) and carpet.
EditSteps
-
1Take the scratching post to a good place for cleaning. This could be your laundry, the garage or outside.Ad
-
2Shake the post to remove any loose pieces from it that the cat has left from scratching it.
-
3Run a stiff bristle brush up and down the sisal or rope parts of the post. This will remove stuck pieces and dirt. It will also collect some hair.
-
4Run a lint roller up and down the post. It will collect more hair.
-
5Turn the post around when cleaning it. That way, you get the whole post.
-
6Add a narrow hose end to your usual vacuum cleaner. Turn the vacuum on and vacuum all of the carpet parts of the scratching post. If it still looks dirty after this, you might need to spot clean any stains using dishwashing liquid.
-
7Shake it one last time.
-
8Sanitize the post. You don't have to but it can be good to spray the post with a disinfectant suitable for cats. This will kill off any germs. You can use a spray of half half vinegar and water on the post to clean and sanitize it instead of disinfectant. Vinegar won't hurt cats but make sure it has dried off before giving the post back to the cat or it might hate it!
-
9Give the post back to the cat when it smells neutral again.Ad
