Just kidding!!!! I’ll be live coding, normalizing the difficulties and allowing the space for the students to tackle statistical thinking, experimental design and analysis all together.

Yes I am. I’m terrified. Of COVID and also of the creeping assumption that feeling terrified about an out-of-control global pandemic in the context of spectacularly weak public health policies reflects some personal hang-up of mine.

I won't believe in anthropogenic climate change until we randomize a sufficient number of planets to fossil fuel burning vs no fossil fuel burning.

Lit reviews aren't about you: how much you've read, how harshly you can critique. They're about your reader: what does s/he need to know to position your research question and proposed answer in the field?

We often get asked why we cover our skin even in hot weather. Why do we need long pants, long sleeves and head/face coverings in 100+ weather? Reason one: health experts advise anyone to dress in light layers to keep cool when working in the sun. (1/thread)

Labor Day celebrates the folks who built America and their heroism as they stood up to the ruthless industrialists who exploited men, women, and children. Labors’ achievements—from the 40-hour work week to safe working conditions—is written in their blood, sweat & tears.

Really proud of a new book due out next month full of real-world examples of scientists creating the maps that are literally saving lives on the planet, esp. by preserving biodiversity.

The way I think about this is how I often talk to mentees about the situation we are in: it’s not our fault, but it is our problem. Science does require resilience. And that would be true even in a healthy environment. But this unhealthy system requires too much.

"Every [hu]man for themselves" is a capitalist white supremacist myth and does not make a good or just world. Gwendolyn Brooks said "We are each other's harvest; we are each other's business; we are each other's magnitude and bond" & she was not only right but deeply right.

I know faculty/students are eager to get back to class and that some “are ready” to be done with Covid and assume a higher risk of infection for the sake of some semblance of normalcy. But it is important to not forget that risk is not borne equally; others may have more to lose.

I am not ready to see my colleagues and students get sick due to ill-informed policies prioritizing finances over well-being. I am not ready to see my 9-year-old in hospital due to administrators playing politics. I am not ready to get sick in the service of institutional pride.
