    Actually, there have been a number of successful (read: negotiated & effective) weapons bans, followed by the majority of the int'l community, including the US! . . . but a ban on autonomous weapon systems is unlikely to be successful. (See ).

    It's naive to think there will ever be an effective ban followed by the international community, especially the US.

    Honest question for : Why hang so much on the accountability hook? That's solvable, as long as we think beyond mere crim liability (one of *many* ideas: ). Do you really think an accountability regime will prevent the dystopia you present?

    And while I'm at it: Most malicious cyberoperations aren't "cyberwar." Not only is that characterization wrong, it's dangerous. We don't want to switch to an IHL/LOAC framework.

    *climbs on hobby horse* Autonomous weapon systems are not hypothetical future weapons. They are in use now. An int'l ban has always been unlikely. We should be pursuing int'l regs on development, proliferation, and use. *rides off into the sunset*

    Read . It is art about the autonomous car trolley ques, how we are asked to hide grief, and citation/editor power dynamics. It delights my inner Eng major & tech nerd, makes my 'rational' tort law self bite my tongue, and devastates me as a parent & person.

    There are at least 17 poets who have been waiting their whole lives for the chance to name the moon of a moon and then scientists just mess around and call it a moonmoon. This is exactly why STEM fields need more arts and humanities education.

    Moons can have moons and they are called moonmoons

    Shall we go double or nothing on the deepfakes bet for 2020, ?

    That certainly is what I’d do if I were them. Why expend/expose capabilities in 2018, at a moment of high alert and attention, when the fish are bigger in 2020 (and you’ll have some people lured into doubting the threat due to a quiet 2018, too).
