    Voila. Merkel's spokesman insists "a confidential talk remains a confidential talk” after media press him on the Downing Street version of events just now. “Our position remains the same,” he said. Berlin doesn't want a no deal Brexit. No escalation.

    Important point here for Berlin watchers. While other capitals offer summit "readouts" as the norm, Merkel's chancellory is very discreet about how it briefs. Any substance/color from a behind closed doors meeting/call takes weeks to emerge, if it ever does
